Hello people,

Whilst poking about in the boot of my TH trying to work out if boot lid can be adjusted (low on one side when closed) I noticed rust forming on the underside of both upper corners of the boot lip. Found it kind of concerng as was thinking of spending some coin on car to spruce it up. After looking around it seems there are several panels that come together at these corners and the external seal seems ti have failed. It seems like it should be ok to repair. The question is has anyone else experienced this and how did you rectify it. Also are there any other areas i should be checking for rust.

And whilst we are here is there anyway to adjust the boot lid so it sits flush with rear quart panel when its shut.

As always thanks for any thoughts.

Hi MadPat. I'm not an auto body repair specialist but if the sections you are talking about are not on the outside of the car (visible cosmetically) what I would do is use something like a Dremel to sand out the rust as much as possible and then mask the area off and use an aerosol can of KillRust to seal the sanded areas. Use the type that converts rust. Once you've done that and let it dry overnight, get an autopaint store to mix up a can of paint to your paint code, once again mask the area out and spray it, using quick side to side movements to stop paint run. As to your seals you could buy new ones (I imagine they'd cost a bit) or get some at a wrecker. Failing that look for where there are any cracks due to pressure perishing and then use my normal trick in these situations. Go to Bunnings or Supercheap and buy a tube of black butyl silicone (important-neutral cure) and then, using rubber surgical gloves, smear the gunk into the cracked sections and then leave the boot open for the seals to dry without any compression from the boot lid itself.
