Hey guys hoping to get some ideas. My car stopped for no apparent reason i had recently rotated the batteries in all my cars (solara included) and all was fine, then 5 - 6 days later i park the car in town and it wont start again????? I have since checked all fuses and used 4 different batteries so its fair to say its neither of those any ideas as i have never owned a solara before thanx guys all input appreciated :)

Need more information. When you say it won't start...
1) is the starter motor cranking but the engine won't fire? Or...
2) is there a sort of click or clunk from under the bonnet when you turn the key to Start and that's all that happens? Or...
3) when you turn the key absolutely nothing happens.

Also, does your interior light work when you open the door, and/or do any dashboard lights, radio or anything else electrical come on when you turn the key from Off to Acc? Does keyless entry work?

If the clicking is small it's probably a relay you can hear, in which case the problem is probably with the solenoid (throws the starter gear into the flywheel ring gear and also acts as a big relay feeding power to the starter motor). If it's a more solid thunk from lower down that's the solenoid, and the issue is probably with the starter motor itself. Solenoids can sometimes stick, usually a bit of a whack with something solid (eg a hammer) frees them up (the solenoid is the smaller diameter tube attached to the side of the starter motor). If this is the cause it will probably happen again, the solenoid probably needs a bit of a cleanout of gunge. There's a couple of other possibilities but I'd eliminate the starter and solenoid first.

also tried arcing the starter

If its your starter I got one off ebay for $85 brand new, its great, not Bosch and maybe made in China, but a great buy for the price and it was free postage http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Starter-Motor-for-Mitsubishi-Magna-TE-TF-TH-TJ-TL-TW-V6-Verada-KE-KF-KH-KJ-KL-V6-/281138555452?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item417529ea3c

arcing the starter is good for when theres an ignition wiring problem, so i guess u can cancel that out. but arcing wont fix the solenoid if its stuffed. a good thwack on the starter itself may free it up if the starter is the culprit. use to happen on my mazda 929 V6. the engine had 360,000kms on it with oil leaks/sweats/piddles what have u...but still went like shit from a shovel. anywho the oil and gunk had settled on and in the starter and its wiring and solenoid (basically throughout its anus) and from time to time it wouldnt start and id hear a faint click sound. id crawl under the car and give it a good few thwacks (bout 3 - 5 hits) with a metal 1/2 inch ratchet on the back end of the starter (round in shape) and magically the car would come to life!! this love affair continued for about 18 months until the auto shit its pants. but yeah give it a try and it should work. either way it sounds like the starter needs replacing.
cheers

starter is easy to pull out ......bench test it

are the the internal working gears on these starters still plastic ..if so the plastics used to fail big time

if you are sure the engine rotates freely and fuel system is working

if not the starter relay or ignition

next
tow it off to an auto electrician
