View Full Version : Time to stop scraping on driveways and speed bumps....

My car hasn't been lowered, but that's whats happening. It's the mudflaps that will scrap on certain driveways, and when going over even fairly modest speed bumps. I suspect the springs have just softened up over time and aren't adequately holding its weight anymore. I know it had GT Monroe replacement shocks put in a few years ago, no idea about the springs but I would suspect they are the originals

I don't really care what the ride height is as long as I don't end up with something too harsh, wallowy, or something that still scrapes on fairly low speed bumps as I drive over them. I mainly want comfort, that said if I can sharpen up the handling a bit then great, as long as it doesn't result in a harsh ride on regular roads.

KF Verada with 17" alloys, I believe its running 235/45/17 tyres?

Any suggestions?
Also how do I tell if the shocks are still good? It doesn't bounce around on hits and responds well to quickly changing direction, it just feels undersprung

I'm not familiar with car setups. I believe these don't have any preload adjustment, so would measuring the static sag tell me if the current springs are no longer sufficient and give me an idea of what springs to get?

Take it to a Pedders and get a Tech Check & Report, they do a static shock absorber test as part of the inspection. Cheap at $28 as well.

If you don't want it lowered to King Low height (-45mm), get a set of King Low SPs (-30mm) or a set of VRX/Ralliart springs (-15mm approx)

Below is my TJ sedan with King Low SPs. Its not crazy low and I think it strikes an alright balance between aesthetics and practicality, if you have a challenging driveway as I do, or contend with sub-standard roads often.

I had them on, but I took them off... because they scraped lol.
I still have them on the wagon and it seems to also have King Low SPs and they scrape slightly on speedbumps and steep driveways.
If you want to keep the mudflaps, you'll probably have to get stock height springs or check out VRX/Ralliart springs (don't know if these will scrape also, however)
