So Id really love to give up my ninja days and stop needing to kick my boot open while trying to hold onto all my shopping. I was first thinking linear actuators, but after a chat with mcs_xi, it sounds like it might be too difficult. So my next and current thought is gas struts. Anyone done it and any thoughts on the idea?

The thing with struts is they need to reach a level of extension before they start working.
Some kind of spring under the parcel shelf where the arms are maybe would do the trick?

if your car has no spoiler ,go to the wreckers and get the springs from a car that has a factory spoiler .
The springs are bigger and with a touch of the button ,the boot will fly open.

Are there existing holes in a non-winged boot lid and boot to attach these springs?

perhaps i should reword "springs "?
it is probably called torsion bars..look in the boot and under the parcel shelf and you will see two lots of rods connecting the boot hinges
...these are the "springs " ...replace them with the heavier ones...but ...make sure you do measure them first to ensure you are getting the heavier sort.
If you come across a car with a spoiler ,but it isn't a Sports/vrx/gtv,dont assume the springs have been changed...as they probably haven't.

Thanks mate. Yeah Ive noticed those bars when changing over the stock 6x9's! Had no idea what they were for... like the look of those springs below, much easier install although usage life prob not as long...
Cheers mate

Big arse spoiler here... so no good! Though these springs have definitely piked my interested! Found a video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhZDPHUKYtQ) of them. It may not translate the same, but Im still slightly excited! Naturally I couldnt wait the 1-5 weeks it takes to get shipped to Wayne and purchased two myself for $9. Will post my findings...

So I finally installed the springs, sorry about the delay. Been out of action for a few months.
I have posted a video (https://youtu.be/5w227P307C0) to youtube.
Far from a seamless opening, but for those who cant be bothered going to more extreme lengths, a reasonable product.

That's a good idea to put one opposite each other so it does not slam open.....
P.S. the hinges needs some WD40 :)

I have a VRX and spoiler was removed. When i hit the boot button on the remote it flys up..:) great when you have your hands full. :)

WD-40 doesnt really last, but I do have some white lithium grease lying around somewhere... waiting for it to pop up :P
I got to remove my spoiler to get it re-painted, thought maybe I might not mind the look once its off and its always possible Id keep it that way... Im thinking Id prefer it on though.
The springs have been half lifting in not so perfect conditons as expected, though I dont want to be jumping on my boot to get enough force for it to close, so thats the trade off.
