View Full Version : Iridium Plugs..which ones?
G'Day all, we bought a 380 for my wife and are Very pleased with it, great little (mid sized) car.
I'm about to do the 100,000K service and want to put iridium plugs in it. I'm chasing opinions on which would be the best to use,
1. NGK BKR5EIX,
2. NGK BKR5EIX-11, or
2. DENSO IK16TT
Any help appreciated,
Thanks in advance,
Graeme

I would go with whatever is in there now. If the original plugs have done 100,000 km without problems, you are not going to do any better no matter how expensive you go.
(PS whatever you put in there, make sure they are the pre gapped ones, ie ending in "-11")

Of that lot I would go for #2, NGK BKR5EIX-11.
Usually plenty on Fleabay selling them for much cheaper than you can buy locally, or else try Rock Auto.

Quick Fleabay search, cheapest I could find for 6 of them (from the US, including postage, = $68.10AU):

Thanks Madmax, I'm not sure what is in there at the moment....haven't checked yet. Good info re the -11, didn't know what it stood for.
Cheers Graeme

Cheers Mate,
I will chase these the NGK ones then, not sure how long the current plugs have been in it but (The Wife) is happy to pay extra for a better product!! Especially if it saves me from touching them for the next 100,000K's!!
I had already read a few threads on here re plug choice including the one you linked.....there was a comment in that one that the Denso Tough plugs were better ie more durable due to an additional iridium earthing tip. The Denso plugs
I quoted in the OP are twin tip I figured that they may have been considered superior. It gets a bit confusing at times on forums as a lot of threads can seem to contradict each other on the same topic.
Appreciate your help.
Cheers Graeme

If you have the owner's handbook it will tell you what plugs are in there at the moment.
-11 means a gap of 1.1 mm.
Considered doing other jobs that may need doing while you do the plugs? Rocker cover gaskets, tube seals for example?

Thanks Max,
Mate I'm about to do the 100,000K service, so getting parts for the following:
Timing Belt- Kit from Mitsfix
Spark plug seals- Rocker cover seal kit x 2 from Mitsfix
Spark plugs- NGK BKR5EIX-11 from Rock Auto
Oil Filter- Mitsfix
Air filter- Mitsfix
Acc belts x 2- Mitsfix
Oil change- Penrite HPR10 or 15 haven't decided yet- Supacheap
Coolant change- Penrite Supacheap
Trans fluid change- Mitsubishi- Local dealer
Brake fluid change- Penrite Dot 3 or 4, not sure which yet- Supacheap
Front Stabiliser Bushes- Mitsubishi- Local dealer.
I am also going to try and solve an issue with Cruise not working. Arms but wont engage. The tail lights glow dully for a few minutes after ignition off so will start with globes,if no joy
I'll then replace the brake switch, if still no luck probably look at the headlight switch stalk......but happy to take any advice with this and any other issues.
I've got a diagnostic tool coming to check for codes etc..
Anything else you would recommend that I do at the same time?
Cheers Graeme

Are the brake lights LED ones by any chance?
Are the brake lights LED ones by any chance?
I don't think so, but will buy the new globes first then check the current ones when I change them.....will report back
You'll be doing the front wheel hubs soon.
Amazing how quiet the car becomes again after putting mew ones in.

Just to clarify do people recommend the rocker cover gasket seals be changed when doing the spark plugs? How much extra labour does changing the seals add to this process? Trying to work out if it is worth getting the seals done as I only plan to keep the car another few years.
Also which accessory belts do you recommend be done at this mileage - about 100k? Again, is it worth getting done or are people leaving the accessory belts for later?

The spark plugs are due to be changed every 100,000k, and the rocker cover gaskets and/or plug tube seals usually go hard, brittle and leak somewhere between 120,000 and 200,000k.
So if you change the spark plugs at 100,000k intervals and you're fussy, then you may as well do the rocker cover gaskets and plug tube seals at the same time, as much of the labour & time with doing this is in getting the intake plenum off then on again. I found that the most labour intensive part of replacing the rocker cover gaskets was getting the old brittle gaskets out of the channels in the covers, it took me a couple of hours digging and gouging with a screwdriver they were stuck so hard. So maybe it's better to replace them when you do the spark plugs at 100,000k, as with any luck they won't be stuck on quite so hard. Also, I suspect mine might have been stuck on extra hard due to the heat generated by the RPW extractors.

TJ bought at 111,600 km - belts were missing chunks and lots of cracks so replaced. The car is now at 150,000 km without rocker cover leaks, so I'm assuming the previous owner did these at 100,000 km.
TL bought at 137,000 km - rocker covers leaking, belts were new.
Judging by these numbers, I'd replace the belts, rocket cover seals and spark plug seals along with the spark plugs for another 100,000 km trouble free running on these parts.
EDIT: Get the mechanic to check the ancillary belt idlers too, they will go dry and squeak sometime in the next 100,000 km. Don't change them if they are ok though.
I'm guessing the cam belt has been done? Neither cars I mentioned above had theirs done when I bought them.

Thanks for the tips Madmax and TreeAdeyMan. Ordered the plugs and will get the seals done too. My cam belt was done a few years ago based on age so no need to change that right now.
