Driving home tonight when I suddenly felt a jolt with my auto ralliart. I then realised that it wasn't changing gears. I had it in normal auto and I also noticed that the neutral light is flashing. I put it in tiptronic to see if it would do anything and it indicated it was in 3rd but would not let me change gears either up or down.
Got home and went out later to look again and when I turn the key to acc and go through the gears they light up as normal but when I select drive the neautral light starts flashing.
Is this an indicator to a particular problem or can anyone give me an idea what might have happened. Nothing like this has ever happened to me before.
I had the timing belt done a few weeks ago and the gearbox was taken out and serviced and new wave spring put in back in February. The car had been going fine until the sudden jolt tonight.
I will be contacting the Transmission mob on Monday but I was hoping someone might be able to give me an idea to the possible problem to put me out of my misery.

I posted this thread prior to flicking through the manual. I found that the neutral light does indeed flash if there is a transmission problem. It is flashing about once per second in a continuos cycle. After having a play with the gears I noticed when I put it in reverse there is a decent thud which wasn't there before. All others gears seem ok, so whether this is the source of the problem I don't know. There is obviously a problem there but it will have to wait until monday now. Bugger.

First step would be to read the ECU codes.

Second would be to disconnect the battery, and then reconnect it the next morning and see if the problem re-occurs.

And Google "aussiemagna flashing neutral"... Ultimately you could be looking at a new gearbox

There was a thread on AMC about a flashing N light - turned out to be bad sensors on the gearbox.

There are two sensors on top of the gearbox. One reads input shaft speed, the other output shaft speed.
If there is a mismatch the gearbox ECU puts the gearbox in limp mode, ir locks it in third gear and flashes the neutral light.

It could be a malfunctioning sensor or the gearbox has developed an internal problem.
Read the error codes to find out where the problem is.

The thud into reverse is sometimes faulty wave spring......even though yours was replaced

No point guessing, error codes needed!

Thanks for all the info guys. Unfortunately I don't have anything here that I could use to try and check the codes. I'm pretty useless at that stuff anyway i'm afraid. I only had the new remodelled wave spring put in back in february so it better not be an issue with that.
Anyway looks like I will have to wait until monday and get it to someone to check it all out. Thanks again for the advice.

When mine was replaced I noticed immediate improvement in shift quality (still do) maybe related to the spring itself or maybe just the procedure of removal/install did something else, who knows? The rear thump to teverse when cold improved too but is still there.
Mits dealer can check the codes.

Well this has happened on 2 occasions and it seems to happen when the car is warmed up. On my home from work (both friday nights!!) when I get to about the same location the car would jump into limp mode. Called the nrma in the hope they might read any error codes but they found none. Coincidentally each time by the time they arrived the problem had fixed itself. (the car had cooled down?). Reading other threads this got me thinking that just maybe it was a relay problem. When it got hot it played up and once cool the car was ok. Anyway got hold of another relay and when I pulled out the transmission relay next to ecu module I could see that it had gunk in it. I put the other relay in and the next day I took the car for an extended drive, longer than when it usually would play up and all seemed fine. So just maybe that issue is fixed.
NEXT PROBLEM: So again after reading other threads I wondered why the relay had gunk in it. I checked the radiator and had to add a little coolant (odd) so I went a step further and pulled up the passenger side carpet and lo and behold I found coolant (bloody hell).
So please excuse my ignorance on this issue but where and how is the coolant getting down into the passenger side carpet area. Where do I look for leaks/problems.
I guess since I found coolant the heater core isn't the issue, OR are they related??.
Any help as usual is greatly appreciated.

Okay, so your heater core is simply a heat exchanger which is connected to the cooling system of the car.

Known fault in Magnas. The heater core (or normally the plastic pipes connecting to heater hoses) fail and it begins leaking coolant into the cabin near the passenger foot well.

Can make the ECU wet and car starts playing silly buggers.

Short term fix is to get a mechanic to bypass you heater core circuit (so no coolant flows through there), and then pull up be carpet and dry it all out with a hairdryer and the sun. You will be without the cabin heater though.

Long term solution is to replace heater core/pipes. Unfortunately this is a pig of a job. Involves removing the entire dash from the car just to access.

Madmagna has written a step by step guide on this site if you google "Magna heater core site:aussiemagna.com" his DIY should come up. If you're in Melbourne (which also means you'll need that heater ASAP) then give his business a call (Mitsfix) for a price.

Thanks for explaining that. I live in Newcastle NSW so unfortunately cant get to mitsfix, as much as I would love them to do the job given their experience. I think I will be biting the bullet and putting in to my local mechanic to get it fixed properly once and for all. The ralliart is worth it. Thanks for the prompt reply and info.
