Had my SX a couple of months now and am still impressed with the car just one thing annoys me.
The box is always shifting up,cruise at any speed and in to too high a gear (IMO)
My TW holds gears longer and to higher revs, more responsive.
I know people rave how its a good box and all,and it is,just couldn't of Mitsubishi not be so anal with the electronics.
Always having to kick down for power and I don't mean WOT all for the sake of economy.
I spose they're all like that and there's nothing can be done.

The 380 motor was tuned by MMAL to have good low down torque but not so good high end power. The PR blurb called it "Torque Command" IIRC.
So the auto trans was programmed to change up early to take advantage of the low down torque, and to improve the fuel economy which wasn't that flash.

TW = 3.5L, 380 = 3.8L
The bigger the engine, the lower the physical rev limit is, hence large engines are tuned for low end torque rather than top end kilowatts.

Also, for the sake of fuel economy tests - the official ones that allow manufacturers to put numbers on the windscreens of new cars - it is better to be in as high as gear as possible.

I drove an auto Commodore that insisted in engaging top gear so early, that the revs dropped below idle speed in some conditions!

A 380 transmission ECU could be be reflashed, possibly, to give you the same change points as a TW, but fuel economy would suffer.

I've found the combination of the straight-through muffler, the 90mm intake and running on premium fuel have all made a very noticeable improvement to driveability in lower rpms, and I don't need to shift down a gear to maintain speed up hills etc like when the car was standard.

If...you can get a hold of a MUT3 you can reset the factory defaults on the transmission.

It is a setting buried in one of the sub menus and it is the ONLY way to reset all the learned values that drivers before you have taught it to adapt to.

The difference can be quiet dramatic, as it was with mine (an ex MMAL press release car).

Disconnecting the battery will not reset it.

You have a tippy, just use it. That way it can have it hold gears on the way up. It will auto down change when conditions allow. I wish my Pajero with heaps more torque would change to 5th at 40kph or so which is what I did in tippy mode. The Pajero will only change to 5th in tippy at 55kph.

I was wondering if it was just me so i'm glad someone else has brought it up first. I put in the 90mm intake and the difference it makes to the general driveability is very noticeable. The hills around where i live used to make the trans kick down all the time at the slightest hint of an incline, but now i can do the same hills at 80kmh in 5th and it doesn't even attempt to change down. I really need to get the straight-through, but i think the hubs need to be done first to get rid of that damned front-end rumble.

I agree doing 60kmph around town is a pain with the 380, I would love to get it reflashed

I think this is a great idea. where did you get this done Zilo?

I agree with Red, having done the same mods and always running 98... increased what feels like "civilised"-ness around town and up and down dales, is quite noticeable. :) on warm days, with slow incompetent tourists everywhere, the extra low down overtaking grunt is quite exciting ;) just gots to figure it out, how to keep it in gear when doing your normal driving, flick it into trip mode when you need some grunt now... rest is liberal application of zee right hoofer! lol

I have my own MUT3.

In QLD send a PM to Rob...aka Foozrcool.
He might do it for a slab of beer?
