Just about to change my oil,it's a good roller cam TR engine and was curious what everyone runs in the old girls? It's got 15w/50 synthetic in it but I'm thinking its a bit of overkill and may just run a 15w/40 mineral oil...what ya reckon??

I'm using Valvoline 15W40 and reckon it is better than anything I've used previously I don't have any scientific evidence to back that up though.
It is a mineral oil. Valvoline actually recommend 20W50 for older engines. However I think by "older" they mean "high mileage" rather than old in years. Even thougn mine is 25 yrs old, it has only done about 70,000 km so that is my justification for using 15W40.
There's noticeably less tappet noise than with the Castrol GTX that I used to use.

Used this in my TP and both 4 and 6 cylinder TSs without problems.

TR engine and TP engine much the same specs all over
. only timing chain set up and rollers with a slight valve dish difference in heads
engine wasnt designed for synthetic oil
the range of oils needed for the TR motor 4 cyl is any of what coldy and mad max is saying
the oil has to suit the current local temp conditions of operations

I am using penrite 15W-40 semisynth.
Was using 20W-50 prior to that but changed to the thinner oil because one tappet was mucking up badly.
No problem after the oil change (maybe due to the oil change itself or the change to thinner oil???).
Also flushed the lash adjusters after the oil change just for good measure.
Would try even thinner 10W-30 (Canberra weather!) if that tappet was still noisy!
