This morning I removed the broken Wave Spring with the transmission in the car. Found 4 pieces and the total about 30mm shy of 1 and a half circles.

Does anyone know how long a complete wave spring is? I have looked for more pieces and will continue to look (under the filter).

Mitsubishi do not have wave spring and it will be 3 weeks to get from Japan.

The old wave spring is 2.95mm by 0.95mm and has open ends, but is greater than 360m degrees (i.e. the metal goes around full cirlce, then overlaps.
DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW LONG IT IS WHEN NEW, OR WHETHER IT IS 2 FULL CIRCLES OR WHAT??

I got a wave spring from Motospecs (4.3 by 3.4mm and a continuous circle, with no ends). But unfortunately it is not suitable for my car (2002 4 speed non tiptronic Advance). Gent at Motospecs said it is the only ws they carry (part KX - 19835). He said it is for 4 cyl and for 6 cylinder that is not OWC (One Way Clutch), When i got home I found my car has transmission with WOC........marking alongside where early third gens have external oil filter.

So the one I got from Motospecs is 3.4mm 'thick' whereas double up thickness of old wavespring is 2mm. Also one from motospecs is harder to flatten.

I would also like to replace the Second Brake Return spring, which is similar to Wave Spring, but more substantial.

Any help and info much appreciated.

Cheers

There's a youtube of a F4a42 stripdown and overhaul which I found really interesting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HVm1AmWS98

I guess you've already ordered the part but assuming I've got the right bit in the breakdown it appears all have been superceeded to 2741A007

The original was a multi layer spiral, updated to a single layer / piece from what i see on the web

Original was MR534166, 2000- 2004 in the US

update: 2741A007

https://www.drive2.ru/l/4310733/

what did they quote?

$13 + shipping ex Japan

Edit.

does look to be about 2 layers of 360 degrees, maybe just shy of .

as for the 2nd brake, best to get the number from local dealer , at the beginning of 2002 in the US models it changed from MD763676 in all models before this date to MR410697, SPRING,A/T 2ND BRAKE PISTON RETURN

I'm not a subject expert on these boxes but that's what I've dug up so far.

Can't you tell by the ends of the spring on whether there is more left or not?

I have a thread "preventative wave spring replacement" that has pics of my broken spring but not sure it is enough to fully understand the length.
I recently threw it out in the bin too :(

The one that came out of my AWD was about 50mm short of two complete revolutions of a helix and the shop that did the work believed it to be complete.

thought I better jump on this wagon too. Anyone had a broken wavy and replaced it but left the piston marked and the pressure plate also slightly marked and got away with it? I am double posting , sorry

I am soon about to change the fluid in my AWD transmission at home.

It's driving fine with no problems, but according to the log book it is due.

How do I go "fishing" for bits of wave spring - not yet knowing if I have a broken wave spring?

I'm not removing the valve body cover, just the drain plug which I believe is magnetic.

Can I insert a flexible magnet probe inside the drain plug hole and potentially pick up some pieces?

Or is it necessary to remove the valve body cover to find anything?

You will usually have a piece on the plug if it has gone as it has a magnet attached.

If it's the original box you may be able to find out with the VIN thorugh a dealer to see if you have the old spring to start with. I've been having a dig and Feb/mar 2005 looks to be the crossover point to the new 1 piece in other markets
