everyone has their own opinions on this, and here's mine opinion;
do change the leads if the leads have been in there for a long time and you can see sparks in the dark coming out from the lends.
Spark plug wise, if you can be bothered changing them regularily, then you can save some money by using standard bosch plugs, but I rather spend the extra money on Iridiums and change plugs not too often.
lends are around $70~80
Iridium plugs are around $16 ech (so 6 would cost about ~$100. )
While you're at it, you might as well give the throttle body a good clean. There's two gaskets that you may need to replace if it's in bad shape, otherwise just reuse the old ones in there, they are metal gaskets so it's unlikely that they will wear out too quickly.

Pretty much agree with White Devil.
Shop around for good qual leads - why buy crap since u change them. Consider dizzy cap too and the capacitor.
Brand of plugs? Debatable, but only use known good qual plugs.

As whitedevil said, its only worth changing the leads if they are worn, have signs of corrosion and you can see the spark jump down the lead in the dark. No need to go for the best, standard mitsu leads are fine.
As for plugs, definatly go a set of iridiums all round if you don't mind paying 16-18 bucks a plug. I have them in mine and I sware by them.

What's the thickness of the standard leads?

8mm if I'm not mistaken.
Get some nice 9mm's...You probably wont notice much difference..but they do conduct better and give a better spark. 10's arent worth the money.

A Speed shop said he couldnt find any aftermarket leads for a 3rd gen but plenty for the 2nd gen.
The factory ones are fine.

Trav get NGK Iridiums front and rear. They are 18 bucks each from conventrys and these are the best you can get (in my opinion)

iridium's are worth every cents they costs, had them for a couple weeks now, and the car seems to run better fuel and performance wise and it's on very old donk 3.0 V6 with 265K on it :D

I dunno what store you went to...but a quick visit to topgunleads.com.au proved them wrong.
