My ride is a 2001 Magna Sports (250K) 5spd tippy. The problem I have is that when I park the car there is a weird sulfur smell (fire crackers) odour emitting for it.More prevalent when in the garage.Had the exhaust shop check the cat and it seems ok.Any ideas of what it might be.
cheers

Hydrogen sulphide, or rotten egg gas, comes from a hot cat. Cat too hot & not liking your petrol!

Stop hammering the car, change the brand of petrol, and see how you go.

If no joy, change the cat.

thanks for you reply Madmax.
The cat was removed and checked by the exhaust shop.No fault was found. He advised that the magna cat's are very resilient and durable. He has never had to replace one due to a fault.
I have always used BP 91 unleaded and on occasion the higher octane.Don't really hammer the car!

The smell indicates the cat is working as it should.

However while you're having this smell the catalysts are having to work too much in converting the exhaust and that makes the cat hot and can make it break down.

If the root fault is not fixed no amount of changing cat will fix anything.

So, while changing drive behaviour and/or fuel may help...

look at faults causing low fuel pressure leading to lean run, pump, filter, injector, fuel pressure regulator, or an oxygen sensor malfunction causing engine to run lean, mis-read airflow due to dirty MAF leading to leaness, vacuum leak, anything that causes a lean situation...

The sulphur smell comes from the petrol, no other source is possible - change the brand you use as a starting point.

Not a leaking rocker cover gasket is it, giving you a
Burnt smell

I think that anyone who has owned a magna would know the burnt oil smell. This is definitely not that.Did change gaskets and oil ring 2 years ago and engine is as clean as ever.

Just my 2c worth. When I had my KW tuned by SKR and made it leaner, I started getting the sulphur smells and I tried different petrol brands. Wife's stock Outlander with the same petrol does not smell of sulphur.

mmm have bought the same petrol from the same station for over 12 months. This car never goes on long trips over 100kms.All other family members use the same local station we no apparent problem.

In saying that I will change to a different brand. Can't hurt.
