Hi guys,
My car has just started making a rattle sound around 3,000rpm.
It is not very loud and can be easily missed, and it is specific to 3,000rpm only.
Just wondering if this is common for the Y pipe to make that noise?
And, if the Y pipe is off the car, can it be checked for condition?
Car is a KJ2

I would like to bump this, my '01 KJ Verada makes the same noise at 2000RPM but seemingly at random times.
It sounds like the exhaust is leaking air and when the car rumbles it seems to accelerate very slowly like it's trying very hard.
Other times it won't happen but when it does the car feels like it's towing the Titanic :/

I think our issues are different, seeing as mine has no loss in power, just a reasonably faint rattling sound

Rattling Y pipe is common , at least in early Gen 3's. I dont know if it was fixed in later models. In my case it was most obvious when the car was cold and was being revved in neutral or was moving off from a standstill. It was probably even more obvious to an outside observer.
If the Y pipe is off the car you might be able to detect it simply by wobbling it around. That was all I needed to do. The solution for me was to cut a flap at the join and remove the small baffle that had become loose. I then had a welding shop seal it up again. I never noticed any difference in performance without it.
I could be wrong but your symptoms don't really sound like a rattly Y piece to me.

I've started hearing something similar from the right rear area of my TL VR-X.
Very intermittent but when it does happen it's only ever around 1500rpm and almost always in 5th. Has a pulsating type of sound that repeats about once every half second if I keep it at speed. No loss in power either.
Checked for loose wheel bearing but no play that I could detect.
I'll take it to my mechanic and see what he thinks, but based on some Googling I'm guessing that it could be a loose heat shield.

This noise somehow went away by itself with me.
I had previously dropped a bolt somewhere down the engine bay which I suspect it must have been that vibrating somewhere before falling off

After checking the rear muffler out and seeing a whole heap of corrosion, it was pretty clear what was causing the sound.
I'm booked in at A1 Exhausts in Penrith to get it replaced next week.
