Hi Guys,

Did a search but couldn't find anything on this one.

TJ AWD Sports. The noise started yesterday. Whining sound coming from engine, toward the top, though cannot isolate. The noise does not rise or fall with engine revs. Air con and other accessories are off. It sounds like an unhealthy supercharger whine (definitely not a supercharged engine). I don't notice it on cold starts, only when the engine is warm. Turn the engine off, noise dies down and stops. Start her up again and the noise is immediately back. Car has 166K genuine kms. Car passed blue slip with flying colours 2 weeks ago. No fluid leaks of any kind. No loss of power, no drop in revs, no problem with accessories or electrics.

Any thoughts?

Cheers.

I've got the same thing just happening with the TW and 177 000k. have not had a chance to isolate it due to bigger problems but I'm thinking tensioner pulley or alternator bearings. You could try removing the main drive belt and see if the noise goes in which case it's still going to leave figuring the 2 items above but at least you'll know what area. then maybe spin each by hand and see if you can hear/feel any roughness or binding, maybe starting to seize.

My noise does vary with RPM a l ittle but i only pick it up at low speed with the window down ,<40kph

Actually , could be A/c pulley but i'm pretty sure mine is present with A/c on or off and does appear to be more topside.

Did you take your intake manifold off or anything like that?

If it doesn't rise or fall with engine revs then look at radiator cooling fan?

Hmmm...

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll give all of those a try and let you know how I go.

Take off the plastic engine cover to better pin-point the noise. Can also use a large screw driver and place the tip on various places and then rest your ear on the handle. It acts as a stethoscope. The noise will be magnified.

If the noise is constant (independant from the engine speed), it could be the radiator fan or even the inside passenger air fan. If it varies with engine speed, check that the timing belt cover is not being rubbed by the timing belt. The large screwdriver stethoscope is a good tool, but be careful when poking it down around the moving belts.....

Lol, yes, only place it on the metal the pullys are attached to. Use a torch for better visibility.

My guess is the idler pulley. Drivers side, low down. Makes a constant unpleasant squeal when the roller bearings wear. The noise doesn't change much with revs and tends to get worse as the engine warms up. From memory I think its the same belt that runs the A/C. Spray some WD40 onto the front face of the pulley to test it and temporarily quieten it.
