View Full Version : Computer Accuracy?

Hi all, after recently replacing my air sensor I was wondering how accurate the computer is, namely the computer responsible for calculating fuel averages, KMs left etc.

On the same topic, is there any way to reset the calibration? I recall many situations refuelling before the tank runs out and although the fuel dial rises, the computer doesn't update the fuel total.

Thanks in advance!

Mine is very accurate.
From memory nothing updates unless 15L petrol installed minimum...(cant remember where I read that...)
Are you only putting $20 fuel or ?

I don't know what model you have but one thing that is important is whenever the car batterry is removed the trip computer display will flash. it needs to know what variant engune and whether S sedan, W wagon as they have different capacities. Apart from that very accurate. Fuel total i thought was total fuel used and resetting is just a matter of scrolling through I think to fuel and just hold the button till the double beep, same for resetting distance.

I don't know what you mean by before the tank runs out? Everyone refuels before the tank runs out unless you like pushing the car. Range is just an estimate based on the remaining fuel and the av fuel consumption. Once the low fuel lamp is on the computer will not give you an estimate.

Owners manual may explain it's operation better.

The one weakness of the standard trip meter seems to be that it has no compensation for injector latency at very short injector pulse widths. Any significant amount of idle running (e.g. lots of start-stop traffic) will tend to result in more fuel being reported as consumed than is actually consumed. Otherwise the fuel reporting is quite accurate in my experience.

I reset the trip computer when filling the tank. The amount of fuel on shown on the bowser is always within 1L of the trip computer.

Hi all thanks for the clarification. I have a 01 KJ Verada, and my fuel economy is horrible. Given it's almost done 294000kms already. Lately it's been getting an average 17.5L/100km and the distance remaining estimate may tell me I have 100km left at 1/4 tank left. I always refill a substantial amount, with the minimum being half a tank at least.

I want to know specifically whether the computer can distinguish between different fuel types and whether the lack of updating remaining distance is normal. One time I saw I had half a tank left and the computer would flash " --KM ". At any rate I've got the car scheduled for a muffler fix and I will also be changing the air sensor to see if these things may help my fuel economy. Are there any other things I may need to check for in terms of fuel?

Oxygen/02 Sensor, not air sensor, it might help a bit but it's only fuel trim at cruise.

That sounds like a fuel leak.

You need a knock sensor for the computer to do its own advance/retard spark magic, I don't think Magnas/Veradas (according to eBay - TS/TR do) have them - please correct me if I'm wrong.

If it comes to it I make note to fill up on long hauls and check the fuel usage (litres) and the kms driven.

Brim it again at next fill up and make note of how much I had to fill it back up with, then do the maths. The couple of times I have done this it has been very accurate!

Perhaps your fuel sender is playing up?

There's no reason the range should say --km when you've just put half a tank in.

You can push and hold the trip button when range to empty is displayed and see if it resets.
