View Full Version : Rear wheel grinding - TJ Wagon
Hi everyone,
Just noticed this the other day. My left rear wheel makes a quite a loud grinding noise between 10-20kph, after that its almost non-existent.
I do have quite wide wheels, and quite low on the back as well, although its been like this for well over a year, without issues.
Could this just be the shocks wearing out or similar?
I'm going to be booking it in for a service soon, although I have to commute to the city often. Would it be advisable to keep driving?

Would it be advisable to keep driving?
Could be a wheel bearing, or a defective tyre. Or just the brake shoe dragging. ie could be yes-serious, could be no-serious.
If you choose to keep driving, take a phone and cash to pay for a towtruck with you just in case.
Thanks for the reply Max.
I've rotated the tyres today, still getting the same noise. So I can rule that out that one dodgy wheel.
I might try putting my spare wheel on there - see if it makes a difference.
Otherwise I think I'll drive it as minimally as possible for now.

Really should get it on a hoist and see if there is anything obvious first

Fair chance it's wheel bearing, especially if you have extra load on it with oversize tyres. jack the wheel off the ground grab top and bottom and see if you can get it to "clunk" a little as you try to rock it back and forward - a minute bit of movement is acceptable but a defined clunk isn't. The other option could be a sticky park brake too, my TJ has been driving me nuts with the rears sticking, no amount of disasemble, clean and grease seems to cure it for more than 3 or 4 months - it gives a scrape scrape sound until the wheel rattles the shoes of the drum.
P.S. if the bearing is gone talk to a specialist bearing shop, as normally you have to buy the whole hub for a wagon - but the bearing can be separated from the hub - they may have a bearing only replacement to save a few bucks. Don't buy the cheap no name ones (aka ebay) - they don't last.

I had a handbrake cable mount come away from the body, the one at the rear, which then allowed the cable to shift over closer to the inner edge of the wheel. If the wheels were wider, then the cable would have rubbed a bit.
