I'm intending to flush the transisssion fluid and the change the fiter on my 2003 KJII Ei verada which I just recently bought. However, when I take a look at the workshop manual, it gives no instruction for changing the filter and only for flushing the fluid. When I take a look at the supercheap online store it has a transmission filter kit for my model. So im not very clear as to whether there is a filter to be changed or not.

Unless you want to remove and dismantle the trans, you've got no chance. External filter was deleted as a production change and what you're looking at is the internal filter. You could fit an external magnefine filter on the trans cooler lines but you'd have to work out the direction of flow as the filter is directional. 5/16 is the hose size

Isnt the internal filter the standard in most auto trans. By removing the transmission pan, the filter can be easliy be replaced and sealed back with a new gasket. But with this trans, i'm asumming the only diff is that the pan is mounted vertically on the side instead at the bottom?

looks like a pan but in reality it's more of a valve body cover. find a manual, google it, whatever, the only filter from about 1999 on is internal and only accessible with the trans removed and the bell housing removed

yeap its the F5A51. Yea the workshop manual says its a valve body cover. It seems so counter intuitive though that the filter is not easliy accessible as its a vital process when flushing to get all the bits out.

My opinion, they should have kept the external too. Just keep an eye out for pieces of metal on the drain and plug, should not be any "bits" maybe very fine pasty metal residue stuck to the plugs.
SPIII is the way to go and cheapest too if looking at fluids from the dealer

I'll just have to consider the magnefine filter then. I have not contacted the dealer yet so im not aware of their pricing, so the fluid im considering right now is the penrite mhp which cost $42/4L

I'm sure you'll get plenty of other opinions on that but you'll get 5L of the right stuff at the dealer for those $$$$

Do yourself a favour & get the genuine Mitsubishi SPIII auto trans fluid from Mitsubishi. A 5 litre bottle should only be around the $45 to $50 ball park, like TW2005 said ^^^^^
You'll find most Transmission specialists who are familiar with the Magna transmissions will usually frown at you if you give them non genuine transmission fluid, as they are known for being problematic when using something other than genuine.
I've been using magenfine 5/16 inline transmission filter since doing a major service on mine a few years back (mine has the internal filter also). Mine was fitted on the return line with the filter arrow pointing towards the transmission (return direction). You replace them pretty much every 12 months or 20,000ks and they only cost around $25 from Bursons, repco, supercheap etc..

Im assuming that I could also get the 5/16 size as well?, after reading up in this forum, looks like genuine fluid is the way to go!
There must be some difference of opinion between the dealers. I went to my local Mitzy dealer for a couple of bottles of SP 111. The parts guy said they don't sell genuine auto oil and buy Castrol in 60L drums which he would sell me at $16.50per litre if I brought my own container. WTF? I went to Super Cheap and bought Castrol transmax SP3 for $51.50

Weird, sure it's going to made by a major manufacturer. I think BP at one stage made it, castrol was the other unless they're part of the same group which I don't know. No doubt they get it in bulk for the workshop but at $16.50 / liter you're getting ripped. i think I paid either 43 or $47 for 5 so at that price $82.50 = ripoff
Part number is MR922838, 5L bottle , darwin had it and that was 2 months ago. try another dealer, of course there's a chance Mits is no longer getting this but the service manager here said he always keeps it on the shelf and gave no hint of supply issue
transmax is a multivehicle blend, personally I play it safe and get the real stuff, that's me

reading between the lines, but a drain and refill leaves about half the old fluid on the system. I do a drain and flush as outlined in the service manual. 10L is probably cutting it fine to get it all pumped through clean.
