Just a silly question can a faulty inhibitor switch stop a car from moving in gear? I'm looking at a TL Magna on ebay and the guy says it wont move in gear, heres what he said
"Did drive as had transmission service but as soon as I put it in manual mode it wouldn't move , someone come had a look Sunday said it could be the selector module that sits on the top of the gearbox ?"
Could it be something easy to fix? or more likely the transmission is stuffed?
cheers

I'll just tell you what i experienced before my box terminated. I had several issues happening at once but my inhibitor switch had worn contacts and at one point when I selected D the indicator was out on the dash suggesting open cct, my box would not go into drive, remained neutral. Going back to N then reselect . D illuminated and normal engagement.
When they say in gear do they mean range selected but not in gear, no engagement , or "in gear" will not move?
I was a little surprise and always though in that position the manual valve would default to 3rd but thinkng about it now, probably true in limp and the TCU not controlling any solenoids but I'm assuming the TCU held neutral since it saw no D selection.
As for it no drive in tippy, their a separate set of contacts, the inhibtor switch would still be in the D position , so a gear should be selected i.e still in low , i could understand if it was in low and the Tippy upshift or down shift contacts were faulty and either unable to upshift or vice versa, go up the gears but unable to come back down in tippy , I've had that.
I'd be wary and want to check it out in person. Delayed engagements in D or R are a warning sign, watch out for binding in the shifter as you select , just been through that and metal debris getting into the VB manual valve jamming, = dead trans for me.

Thanks so much for your reply TW2005, that is a big help for me if I check the car out, cheers
