the rack on my TW wagon is leaking, so I'm looking for prices to fix it. One suspenstion place quoted $1195 and said that it's the same rack in TE-TW. I thought that the TL and TW got the rack out of the ralliart. Am I wrong?
I don't want it to come home with vaguer steering of the earlier models.
Any advice much appreciated.

The racks in the TL/W are different.
You can't tell them apart though and most reconditioned racks would likely be the older style.
You can ask for your rack to be remanufactured, but it will cause a bit of a delay

Not having ever touched a rack but 1200 bucks just because it's leaking, seriously. You can get rack seal kits, no idea how involved it is.

They look the same but the brand name on them is different, I replaced the rack in my KH with one from a TL late last year, I just forget the brand name on the KH one compared to the TL one, I will need to check my older posts.

Just looked up my post regarding this last year:
Since I haven't done it before took me about 6 hours all up, good question about the physical differences between the racks as I asked this question about 2 weeks ago a few times with no replies, I found the brand name to be different, my old rack was TRW I think and the new one was TSSA, if that is the brand name I don't know, they looked both the same otherwise plus the TL rack was a goldish colour and the old rack was just the silver colour. How does it feel to drive? well I need a wheel alignment but i find there is more feel in the steering off centre, i will get back to you after the alignment and let you know what its like Spetz.

Where is the brand printed?
Can it be seen with the rack still in the car?

Is just at the end of the shaft, can be seen with the rack still in the car but you might have to look from underneath , have a look at this one on ebay http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mitsubishi-magna-power-steering-rack-/331646356525?hash=item4d37a9cc2d, if you look just above the ATF line you can see it say TSSA. Cheers

I don't know for sure if the TSSA one is the better rack from the TL/TW , but the one I bought from a wrecker was advertised as coming from a TL and it does seem to have a little bit more weight in the steering, this ebay one says its suits a TJ but says TSSA on it and not TRW like the one that came out of my KH.

$1195 for an exchange rack to suit any 3rd gen magna is a rip off, plain & simple.
I've just had mine done and it was almost half the price of your quote (it was a rebuilt TL/TW rack BTW). Heck, even Pedders (who are usually expensive) quoted me less than $800!!
This shouldn't cost you more than $750 for an exhange rack, fitted. Seriously, look elswhere m8.

This quote was from pedders! and I am looking elsewhere.
The thing that worries me is how do I ensure they fit a proper TW rack? Does anyone know the part number for the TW rack?

I just spoke to another p/s guy who said, could be the rack, could be the pump, bring it in, which is fair enough.

How true but where is the fluid dropping? Places I'd check would be around rack boots which would also mean the boots are shot, hoses which can go hard and leak, around the pinion hosing which again you can get a kit to reseal, hard joints which have o-rings which again go hard and shrink causing leaks. My TW with 178000K has no leaks from the rack boots but just did the boots, they were shot and split but I did see a very tiny weep around my pinion housing, rest is ok.

No idea on part number, try a dealer , give vin and see if they can tell you the part # from there system fitted to yours would be my suggestion , that way you'll be 100% certain it 's correct.

Mitsubishi may have changed the supplier at some stage pre TL/W and the valving may have only be changed further down the track though?
Is it possible the TJ2 series received the upgraded RalliArt rack?

I had a re-built later model TL/TW rack fitted on my TJ2. TSSA brand (same brand as my old rack) & apart from it feeling slightly weightier as an initial first impression, it otherwise feels & steers exactly the same as the old rack, so you could be right.
I've been told by other forum members that it's actually the power steering pump from the ralliart magna that makes the most difference in steering feel & responsiveness, not so much the steering rack.

How true is this? is it more the rack or the pump? anyone know for sure?

Pesonally I will not touch reco racks, I am yet to see one last more than 2 years without leaking or worse.
Try and get a low mileage one from a wreck and make sure you use genuine fluid and flush when it is needed, often PS systems will never be touched for years

With this, have you thought of getting a new rack? Better by far than a reco one

Mal I contacted you guys at Mitsfix a couple of months back and was advised that new ones weren't available, nor were any second hand TW AWD racks available (long shot on the used racks I know) So no luck there.
Everyone else I tried pretty much said the same thing: Brand new TW AWD racks were no longer available & Reco'd exchange units or re-build of original rack were the only options available :-(
I would've been happy to pay a premium and buy a new TW series steering rack :-S

I have new ones available, have a couple of them, some were found, we had purhased the last of them and then we were contacted by a dealer who advised had found a couple AWD and FWD racks so we got them

Mine was still quiet & worked perfectly fine, just had leaky seals only, maybe that's why the newer rack on mine hardly feels any different to the old one?
Either that or the re-cond rack was another TJ AWD unit & not a TL/W - which wouldn't surprise me as it honestly feels almost identical - only it felt slightly weightier when I first drove it but still exhibits same slow & vague steering response which was a big disappointment, as I had recently driven both AWD & FWD TL magna autos & I did recall both had weightier steering that also felt tighter/more direct.
I've had a few magna owners say to me that the ralliart power steering pump makes a noticeable difference also.
Unless I can score a used one on the cheap, I'm not gonna bother wasting any more money replacing something that isn't broke.

Thanks Mal, but unfortunately, I've already spent the money & had an exchange reco put in 2 months ago as couldn't find anyone at the time (including the 2 local dealerships) that would sell me a new one.
Dratts !! as I was originally chasing/wanting a brand new TW AWD rack :-S

Hi Mal, do you know if the TW takes the same rack as the TJ? And how much do you want for a rack? thanks

Racks do fit a TJ from the TL if that makes sense, you are welcome to call us for prices if you wish
