so while hunting and awaiting potential replys i found some rust behind this box under the leaf gaurd

rekon that could could a leak inside and best way to patch it? not alot of room behind there ( was thinking a heap of thick body deadener might work ? )

I'm having the same problem at the moment with my magna. I found a channel on the right side of that where water might be getting in, I found mine was rusting and has a couple holes. Maybe the same thing is happening? I would definitely check it if you are noticing rust in that area.

cant see much behind there due to having a big head lol. tried sticking the phone in to take a few pics but couldnt get a clear pic,

got in this morning and stuck half a caulk of sikaflex and mashed it around with my fingers but didnt fix it so i just went and brush around half a 1 litre tin of body deadener.

with the hose i can tell its leaking from behind that box thing , just really annoying there isnt much room to get in there

Pity you put all that stuff in there. The rust will just continue to grow under it.
Probe it with a screw driver and see how bad it is, if really bad try to get to it from the other side. Remove the glovebox and see if you can get to it, or at least see how bad the rust is.

If it was my car, I'd cut off that air intake (angle grinder), de- rust the area, and put a large metal section over it.
Then no water can get in, and no fresh air - use the air on recirc or crack open a window.

crap, i thought body deadener was supposed to stop rust.

would running the ac on recurc just leave the air getting stale while ac is on?

Smelly? Yes, probably, but your car is going to stink anyway with the moulds that grow on damp carpet underlay.
Just open a window to let out the smell of old socks, etc. lol

I had a car with a water leak, couldn't trace the leak and the carpet grew a mass of mould that I couldn't kill off, the smell just got worse - didn't want any health problems so I junked the car.

You shouldn't have a problem with rust under your carpet as Mits treated the floorpans against it. Here's what I did when I had water in the floor wells and when I checked with MMA they said I had done precisely the right thing.

1. Drop a couple of capfuls of Pine-o-clean in each floor well which was flooded and leave it there for at least a quarter of an hour. This will kill any microbes that might cause carpet rot.

2. Go and rent a steam cleaning unit from your local Coles or Woolies. Steam clean all the carpets affected by water. The steam cleaner will suck the bad water out of the floor well and also help to sterilise the carpets.

3. Go and buy a few bags of the white silica kitty litter from the supermarket and fill each flooded foot well with the stuff. Leave the car in a sunny area with the windows partially down for at least a whole day.

4. Shovel out the larger part of the silica kitty litter and then vacuum out the remainder. At this point I'd use a can of the foaming carpet cleaning spray just to help with any smell which remains.

5. Keep the car in the sun for another day...windows partially open and vent open as well. At night put a couple of water dehumidifiers in the car and shut all the windows and vent. This is what I mean:

You might have to continue airing the car for a few more days (pray for sunny weather!) and then you should be right.

Good luck.

Vinegar and water in a spray bottle also works as a deodoriser .....

I second the vinegar and water solution.

Not only as a deodoriser - moulds hate acidic environments, so the vinegar solution (acetic acid) will also help prevent mould growth.

I also make my own washing powder ..... lol

I think there's supposed to be a small but constant flow of air in and out of the cabin just to ensure noxious fumes cant build up. Not sure where all the vents are tho.
