As a new member and new TJ owner, I thought I would pass on my thoughts on the most underrated fixes for the above and poor fuel economy; from my experience with previous cars.
A really thorough spray of throttle body cleaner to the throat of the throttle body cleans up carbon deposits. Also CRC Mass Air Flow sensor sprayed onto the sensor wire, ( don't touch the wire ) along with a new air cleaner will do wonders.

These are not a hot wire type air flow meter. They are a Karman Vortex type and measure the sound wave frequency generated by the passing air. I have read that cleaning them with anything other than a gentle blast of compressed air is not recommended.

Thanks for the correction jimbo!

I've also read that because the air flow sensor uses ultrasonics the angle of the air flow is important and changing the flat panel air filter for a pod actually degrades the air flow measurement as the turbulence gives poor readings. You're right about cleaning the throttle area though as it does get very dirty - It is important to protect the Idle Speed controller on the throttle when cleaning it as some nastier cleaners can damage it.
