Well last night was a disaster
Was halfway to work (an hours drive) cruising along with the cruise control on and then the car revs out to the red line. I look at the dash and the car is still in gear but the 'N' light is flashing. I pull my car over to the side of the road to discover that I now have no gears in my tiptronic. This is gonna cost me a shedload i just know it.
Guess I just ran out of forward.....and backward.
But i still have all this cool 'stuff' below

if it's simple then it will just be a major loss of fluid. otherwise its $$$

man that is not good at all. know how it feels.......... and it ain't good! maybe you can speak to your local mitsu and see if they can show some goodwill. afterall your car is still pretty new and having the gearbox go so easily like that just shows there were already major problems inherent since manufacture. you don't push your car very hard do you?

When the N light flashes it means your auto was over-heating, have you tryed driveing the car again since it happend?
mine done the same thing once (after doing a burnout), i just let it cool down and it was fine
try changing the fluid...........youll be serprised what it can do!!!
good luck

If this is the first time it happened, then it more then likely overheated, just get the oil changed and the filter.
If it's an ongoing thing then the forward clutches could have spat the dummy, that means a reco box, and your looking at $2500 minimum.

thats seriously stuffed, ive never seen an auto box just die like that. It's looking like i will be definitely getting a manual for my next car now (I was considering a tiptronic).

you know, i was thinking on the way home from work today that it can't be your gearbox itself thats stuffed. An auto gearbox doesnt just give way like that!
Usually if something is wrong, it should have gone into limp mode, that is, you'll be limited to the first two gears i think.
I'm thinking maybe your auto tranny computer is stuffed, or it could just be a tranny shift cable thats given up. I highly doubt it is something in the gearbox thats gone broke.

Yup I have tried driving it since to no avail. The N light flashing twice per second is overheated fluid. Once per second (mine) means that it is in a failsafe mode to stop any damage to the engine or the rest of the drivetrain. So far I'm up against an exchange reco tranny for $2500. I will talk to the mechanics further tomorrow. As far as goodwill is concerned, Wakelings in Campbelltown dont know what that means.
I'm also told that with the electronic transmissions there is no real warning, the computer keeps ajusting till it cant adjust anymore, then it shuts the transmission down. This is what has happened to mine.
The fact that I only had the car serviced about 2000 k's ago doesnt seem to register with anyone.
Shall keep you updated until this part of the saga is over.

Well I got my car home today.
Had to fitted with a Reconditioned Mitsubishi Automatic Transaxle. Not a cheap process.
Haven't had the chance to really drive it yet but so far so good. If I kill another transmission i'm goin manual baby.

I don't drive it like MMAL intend for their target audience to drive it. But then again i'm not a middle aged guy using it to pick the kids up from school and quick trip to the shop to get the groceries.
MMAL have been written a letter, not to gain anything, but i am now $2500 behind and it made me feel better by writing to them. As yet there has been no response and in all honesty i don't expect one.
I have asked the mechanic and he can offer no explanation as to what caused it. I suspect it was a case of taking the inspection plate off, scratching the old noggin and saying 'I think it needs a new one' :doubt:

OK just when you thought this story was all dead and buried, there's a minor update. Received a call from a very pleasant lady at MMAL Adelaide Head Office. She has been fighting her way through a mountain of customer paperwork and has eventually found my letter. At first she said that according to their system I don't own nor have I ever owned a Magna, a few polite words were exchanged and after I read her my VIN number direct off the compliance plate (i was out shopping) they found me. She says that she wants to speak with the dealer who did my repair (Paul Wakeling Mitsubishi Campbelltown) to learn the service history of my car and also to find out what i was offered as far as this problem was concerned (Pay US $2500 and we'll give YOU a reco gearbox was the only offer I remember). She seemed very interested in wether or not I was offered 'GoodWill', then said that MMAL are usually willing to do as much as they can in cases similar to mine as long as the proper process has been followed.
I never expected a reply to my letter at all so the fact that someone actually read my letter and took time to look into it has me stoked.
