Hi

I have a 2003 TJ Magna. The transmission has just about given out and I am looking for recommendations for supply and fit a reconditioned transmission. I live in penrith area, but would be prepared to travel to a recommended company.

When I used to live in Sydney, I would use D S Jones Automatics,

4/2-4 Anvil Rd,
Seven Hills NSW 2147

9674 2494

I have not needed to use him for a while but when I did I found him to be
professional, competent, courteous, and most importantly, honest.

Give him a call.

Post up your comments/progress.

He normally has a bit of a waiting list, but IMO he is good.

My brother's KJ Jeep is in his 'shop as I type this.

When he is doing routine servicing, his comfortable waiting area is positioned
so that you can see the actual work being carried out - a good thing.

My TL's at York Rd Automatics (a recommendation from a mate who used to own St Marys Automatics) getting a full rebuild after the obligatory wave spring issue. $2.4K for the full kit and labour (unsure as yet about the length of warranty behind it), so there's as comparable a figure as you can find right now, methinks.

I'm picking it up in the morning, so will post a breakdown of costs in terms of parts and labour when I get the paperwork, but a lot of the internals were more or less buggered.

$2,400 for supply and fit of a reconditioned transmission is really good I think. Normally this is in the $3,000 range from when I was inquiring.

In comparison, I spent $860 or so to have the wave spring replaced with the transmission in the car 15,000km ago and hasn't missed a beat since.

I didn't end up getting a complete breakdown, given that essentially the box is now as new.

Warranty is 2 years/40000km, which seems pretty normal compared to what I read on other workshop websites. In all honesty I can see myself moving the car on before the end of that time, so I'm satisfied with that.

That all said, I just had a chat to my mechanic and he recommends a shop in Wetherill Park, although I didn't catch the name.

So in summary, definitely explore your options, I'd say.

Marko transmissions in Penrith, been going there for years to have him service my cars. He has a rebuild room, so he does not source his gearboxes from another supplier.
