View Full Version : Brake/Suspension knocking

Good morning all.

I'm seeking some opinions on what could be the issue for two things in my VR-X.

ISSUE 1:

I've recently put on 380 brakes with brand new pads and discs. Immediately after the change I have had the following symptom.
When driving at speed, going over bumps, I get a distinct rattle from one side (only one side). I believe it is coming from the brakes somewhere, because when I brake and accelerate, there is no rattle.
What is most likely to be the cause?
A visual inspection and checking of all the bolts has been completed. Everything is done up tight.

ISSUE 2:

I've recently put on Dobinson Low's into my stock struts. Three corners are perfectly fine, but one corner has a distinct 'knock' when going over a large bump/driveway. The symptom is more prevelant when the car is cold and will occur 'easier', oddly enough. I've re-seated the spring completely (it was out slightly) and checked all installation steps. It's in there correct. I will add that I am sure the strut top-nut (the middle one) is definitely on fully. It is not loose at all. It was 'rattled' on.

My theory is that the strut itself is pooped and it's taken until it gets lowered for itself to show the problem. Could new struts solve the problem? Is it plausible it is the strut-top or a separate issue?

THESE ISSUES ARE NOT CONNECTED. THE BRAKE ISSUE OCCURED BEFORE THE SPRING ISSUE AS I CHANGED THE BRAKES WELL BEFORE THE SPRINGS

Any sound advice is appreciated.

After some researching on the forums, it appears my brake issue may be the pad 'rattling' around in the caliper. I believe CRC de-squeak may be the fix. I'll have a look into that.

Are there any shims that are supposed to be in with the pads?

Barry,
The 380 pads have the 'shims' built in.

A small update.
I used CRC brake quiet and it worked a treat.

As for the knocking in the struts, it completely disappeared when I replaced them. I will put this down to a faulty strut and/or poor installation on my part (even though I double checked it all)
