I've noticed a squeak coming from the suspension somewhere in my KL, in addition to the minor strut top bumps. I'm just wondering about all the rubber bits and what condition they're in.
Can we identify all the rubber components in the standard suspension and steering? I'd like to get a list together.
So i know of strut tops, control arm bushes, engine mounts, roll stops and I assume bushes for the shocks but where else in steering and suspension?

so what exactly are you after? sway bushes can creak and squeak, mine do especially when cooler. Tw std FWD are AW343164 (23mm) but i would not be surprised if the AWD has a bigger bar. Steering racks have mounting bushes too. If it's low speed bumps like going over humps and from front could be the sway bar bushes. Just dia an ASTRA which was horrible when hot, just took them out gave them a clean and a bit of rubber lube, noise gone.

Well it just got me wondering about all the rubber bits. I wouldnt mind knowing what they all are so i can check them i guess. Car is now 10 years old and i believe rubber decays over that time. Certainly all these minor knocks and squeaks seem to indicate that. I'll renew anything thats worn.
Oh yeah, drive shaft dust boots are another item.

Ok, so for the suspension I've identified the following so far as being rubber or having rubber parts. (Please add if you know of more rubber bits I've missed).
I dont know if this differs between the models?
Front:
Lower control arm bushes,
Lower control arm ball joint dust covers,
Radius rod bush,
Sway bar bushes,
Sway bar ball joint dust covers,
Strut tops, (plastic),
Strut bump rubbers,
Strut insulator rubbers,
Rear:
Lower control arm bushes,
Axle bumper rubbers,
Shock absorber bushes,
Sway bar bushes
I dont see why these rubber bits wouldnt wear out fairly quickly given the load and movement they're under. What, 100,000 k's? My KH has done 245,000 with none of these replaced! No wonder it doesnt soak up the bumps like it used to.
Also, i've read that shocks are only good for about 80,000 k's typically.
It may be worn shocks contributing to the floaty feeling and slight sway in the KL.

Generally speaking most rubber components should last the car somewhere around the 200, 000km mark, that being said, how long is a piece od string
Every car will vary given the conditions in which it is driven in
Same goes for shocks, depends on conditions, but you can generally consider shocks at 80, 000km well worn but still servicable....

Adding brake lines to the list
