Hey guys I have done a heap of searches and cannot find anything relating to my problem with my Aircon. (If you do know please link me in the right direction :)

I went to get my AC regassed about 3-4 months ago. While it was getting regassed they rang me to let me know the compressor was not working. I bit the bullet and they changed the compressor.

When I picked up the car (this is where it gets weird) they told me that they had replaced the compressor and tried to re gas the car. He stated that there are 2 dials on his re gassing machine and that only one was working on my car and the other wasn't. He said it could be a way bigger problem, removing dash etc and went on to show me that the AC still didn't work.

However after leaving the workshop about half way home it started working and was Ice cold! Hooray. That was short lived...

Now the problem I have is my Aircon is intermittent. What I mean by that is, about 7/10 on a fresh start up the AC will work fine and be ice cold then about 5-7 mins later it will stop working. If I am going on a longer drive it will cycle through from working to not working, to working etc.

I have tried to time the intervals but they are not consistent. However it still seems to cycle on and off. Coming into the hot weather id really like the AC to be working.

Do you think that maybe there was not enough gas put in? The compressor is dropping in and out? Is there anyway for me to check these things etc, if anyone could please guide me through some steps or guide me to a place (in SA) that isn't going to rip my bank in half that would be much ly appreciated :)

Cheers!!

If this guy knew anything about AC then he would have known from the beginning that the pump was most likely ok and that the TX valve is sticky, is something that happens in older cars.

Just what he stated about the "dials" or gauges is so clear, if you then force the pump to start for a second the low side will spike showing what is going on.

Other issue is he may have put too much gas in, this will stop the compressor in its tracks.

You can not check anything yourself, you need to have someone with the proper equipment do this, believe me, it is not cheap to buy either, we have just purchased the complete set up

Cheers for the response madmagna!

Do you know anyone in SA that would be worth going to. Little bit sick of people here not knowing anything at all about Magnus. Example "your car is a TJ, so is that 4 or 6 cyl"..... Lol

Aircon systems have a low/high switch.
No gas will stop the compressor from cutting in, and likewise excessive pressure due to a blockage will cause the compressor to not start up as well.
Had the latter problem with a domestic aircon and the Tx valve had to be replaced.
Seems a difficult job on a car.
Go see an aircon shop. They get real busy this time of the year.

Could it possibly be wrong gas put in?

Sounds like the original "serviceman" sees dollar signs in his sleep. Go with Mal's suggestions.
