proper intecooled turbo build will set you back about 12k, only to be dusted by pretty much any decent turbo car which you can buy for 3/4 of that.

what about supercharged

They're pretty rare to get ahold of these days.

from what i know there aren't any of the shelf kits still in production, to get centrifugal intercooled blower would not be much cheaper, probably around 8-10k. The best is to wait for a second hand kit, they do pop up now and then, normally about 2-3k plus fitting of course.

If you sell your car and add the cost of forced induction you can get a Galant VR4 which is AWD twin turbo from factory

Whack that Magna on Gumtree mate and buy yourself an actual turbo car.

im currently going down this path.
Bear in mind im a mechanic by trade and i fabricate 99% of everything.

So, i have finished my turbo manifold, it mounts the turbo over the gearbox and runs off the front bank of the engine, with a crossover pipe from the rear going under the engine and merging with it all.
I have spent $200 in materials just in that manifold, but expect to spend about 20-30 hours in labour getting it fabricated (at approx $120p/h for most workshops)
My turbo was $50, because i was in the right place at the right time and i knew the guy selling, i have had it for a good few years now. Budget around $500-1000 for the turbo.
All the extra bits for the turbo, oil line, drain line, fittings ect, another $200 easy
Then there is the intercooler and pipework, easily around $2-300 for the intercooler and about the same in the custom pipework to fit it (again, factor in around 10 hours labour on top)
Next there is tuning, either modding the factory ecu (wont go that far) or buying an aftermarket unit ($1000-$2000) plus tuning ($500-$1500 on top)
Now its turbo charged, but the engine is still stock, so it wont last long, nothing more than 10psi from what i have read.
For a full rebuild you could easily spend $2000, plus forged pistons (another $600-1000), bigger injectors ($300) and a custom grind camshaft ($300-500)
Realistically you'll probably get around 170-200kw at the flyweel, minus 30% to the wheels (drivetrain losses)
Next weak point will be the clutch and flywheel, easily $1500 to replace that with a quality unit that'll take the pain, plus labour on your install (4-6 hours for the average workshop)
Where my turbo sits, i have had to move my battery to the boot, including fabricating a battery box and running several meters of heavy duty cable, i modded my inlet manifold to move the throttle body to the other side, so more costs there. I spent 2-3 hours on the inlet manifold and 4 or so hours building the battery box, then a couple more hours running all the cables and setting it all up.

From there, you'll want to upgrade your exhaust system to something that flows well, youll want some good tyres to make the power stick to the ground, maybe a turbo timer, boost controller and blow off valve.
do the math if you want, see what the total is upto.
Then you'll want to pimp out the interior, put a stereo in it, mag wheels, tinted windows ect.
It adds up, you could easily be at $40k before your done, if not more.

We build cars because we love it, not because its cheap, it doesnt matter if its a lambo, magna or daewoo, we do it for the enjoyment it brings to create something unique with our own signature on it.
Sometimes we have to work with what we have and it becomes the coolest daewoo ever (in your own eyes) but sometimes you need to accept that its better off to start with a nicer canvas, sell the magna and buy a legnum/galant or skyline, supra, evo ect.

Golden rule, applies to EVERYTHING,

Cheap, Fast, Reliable.
You can only pick 2.
Choose wisely.

I agree with your post 101% Oldf4g.

It's a bit different if you're having a crack at it yourself (like Oldf4g and crackajnr are doing) but if you are paying someone to supply and fit a 'drive in drive out' supercharger or turbocharger for your Magna, it's just not worth it. By the time you do some modest upgrades to your brakes, suspension and wheels/tyres to match the upgrade in power I would be budgeting $20k. Might not cost quite that much but I couldn't see you getting any change out of $15k at the minimum, so it's what I'd be allowing for.

Which, funnily enough, is the same amount of money that it costs to purchase some very nice and very quick second-hand cars.
