Hey guys, I'm having idle issues with my 2003 3.5L tj. It idles extremely rough cold or warm. I've changed the spark plugs, cleaned the throttle body but still idling like crap. Just recently I've noticed a high pitch whine coming from the engine bay but couldn't locate the source. Vac leak?. I have also noticed one of the three ports on top of the charcoal canister is missing a tube, is this normal? Sorry about being a noob with magnas. Growing up with falcons all my life.lol

A search of the forum will come up with a large number of hits and many possibilities. It seems to be a common problem on 3rd gens getting to this age. I'm still trying to resolve my idle issues, I've narrowed it down to the distributor which I'm swapping over with another soon.

Your charcoal canister is normal.

Yea I'll do some digging around the forum's. It's such a common issue there's sure to be some answers. The car needs a major service so a complete renewal of the ignition system could help.

My TJ is lumpy as anything. But seeing I'm lazy, when it annoys me at traffic lights, I just put my left foot on the brake and use the right to up the rpm to about 1K, smoothens out nicely. And allows for a quick take-off when the light goes green.

Most are not really rough, just low. Most common cause is a filthy throttle body but it can happen on clean ones too. So many possibilities, hard to pin down. Mine's generally not too bad, if it's annoying me I pop it into N and it smooths out no probs.

Haha what the heck.

To the op, how does the car go when you apply the AC? Does the idle get worse, revs dip and not really come back?

Sounds like your idle bypass could be clogged, or your idle stepper motor has died.
