okay to start, i found a supercat muffler at the wreckers from my car, got it all mounted up nice but i am incredibly dissapointed in the sound. it sounds absolutely no different except for a light spuffle (no clue ho to explain this noise). my 98 mirage with custom exhaust sounds incredible compared to the magna. now i ask, from the muffler it has a probably 2.5 which within 2 inches goes to 4 then a slight curved muffler tip. will cutting this off at the muffler base and welding a new smaller tip on it improve the sound or am i wasting my time?
will take a photo and post the exhaust

Finds a muffler at the wreckers and doesn't get the sound he expected? lol
Someone will recommend a better setup, I'm sure. But you won't find one at the wreckers.
The "spuffle" sound is probably a leak somewhere in the exhaust system.

Always thought it was the resonator that cancelled out unwanted/unpleasant noise and let through the sweet noise (whatever that is!).

You are wasting your time. Whatever muffler you obtained it can't be of straight through design. Most straight through mufflers sound fairly good on a stock setup because the stock setup has at least another round muffler and a resonator further up the pipe.
Exhaust tip changes nothing. And diameter size hardly changes anything in the scheme of things. Was it a direct bolt on rear section that you got from the wrecker? If so, if you want a good sound I recommend getting a lukey super turbo muffler fitted up to your old rear section. Also get them to tack weld any leaks on the old pipes, by the sounds of it your have some.

This is how to remove a crankshaft pulley. lol

I replaced my TJ sedan centre section with a Redback, due to damage from hitting road debris, soon afterwards found the "spuffle" from the rust holes in the upward curve of the rear muffler pipe, so replaced that with a Walker rear muffler.
I wasn't after a great sound, just the standard noise, but got a nice sound at low speed and a solid roar at full throttle. I'm impressed.
Don't ask for part numbers, I just took whatever they sold me over the counter. (Actually, they had to be ordered in). Roughly $350, DIY install.

Max getting solid roars from his car? Whoa :D

Whoa indeed! And it's getting louder, the cheap fibreglass packing (?) must be all packed down or blown out by now!
Next, some resonator deletions, get that hoon boy induction roar going! lol
I kind of like the song a WRX makes on full revs though, might go out and buy one, just for the sound!

Bring the old maxmobile out to a meet.
I'll show you resonator deletions. Straight pipes.

@ Neo,
Thanks.
However - The OP was pointing out a lack of knowledge about how to put up a picture.
And the link I provided contains my own description of how to do that (with photograph of my DIY crankshaft pulley retaining tool!).

first of all. you dont need to buy a fancy exhaust to make a nice sound. i bought some larger piping, cut muffler in half and changed the inside a bit and welded back together with no holes on my mirages muffler and it sounds bloody awesome. so id expect an aftermarket muffler to sound nice.. as for the spuffle it is not a leak, clearly comes from the tip of the muffler. its just the way the air escapes from the muffler added onto a normal stock sound.

One thing to remember with wagons is that because there is less sound deadening between the tailpipe and the drivers head - and the rear wagon compartment can act as a bit of a resonator if you go too loud on the exhaust it can get very droning on part throttle or highway speed. My car has the Original Sports Wagon muffler and it has just enough note for me without being too noisy at cruise.
You might get a better result with headers on the engine as the exhaust manifolds on the V6 aren't exactly a good gas flow design which is what you need for a "smooth" exhaust note.

Seeing the aftermarket makers have no idea what you would call "nice", you are expecting a bit much. Your idea of "nice" may be a decibel level that is illegal.
But give that muffler the Mirage treatment and see what happens.
The only "spuffle" I've ever heard from the exhaust tip of a car is a misfire.
A lot of people have spent lots of money on different setups to get their version of "nice", so experiment! Have your wallet handy though.

The FWD stock manifolds are really quite good & would be a waste of time going aftermarket ....... unless doing plenty of engine upgrades to make it worth while.
Its the AWD ones that are crap.
DaleMagna , best go with what is "known" to work or you could be chasing your tail forever. Try & source a used Magna sports muffler or lash out on a Lukey which ive got on my AWD.
Ive got a used sport muffler & stock manifolds on my wagon & as expected of a factory item, theyre fairly subtle even without a factory resonator....... would have kept the resonator but it was stuffed, so my exhaust guy deleted it & we were both satisfied with the note.
Do some more searching & weigh up the options.

AWD exhaust manifolds are the same as FWD..... only the Y pipe is different

Re induction roar. I want to know how the hell you get "induction" roar from the exhaust of any car. Induction roar is what you get when you delete the air box and stick a "pod" filter on. Or on the old 5l V8 Holdens, turn the top of the air filter upside down. Now that was induction roar, and the air filter still worked normally...pcv not so well.

okay cheers guys, i plan on giving this one the mirage treatment and seeing how i go, if that doesnt work ill have to leave it for the time being, got wheels and tires to go on soon and most of my money goes on my bikes.

Spot on there. Because of the transfer case the down pipe has a kooky maneuver to perform. The y pipe on the FWD models isn't too bad, the AWD ones are terrible.

No pods needed. Just remove the front snorkel and the intake resonators.

Yep, but just be aware graham7773 that there goes some of your low end grunt when you remove it.
Plus the disadvantage of going from factory CAI to an intake that loses even more power breathing in hot air from the engine bay as it gets hotter.
More induction noise for worse performance - your call.

Wrong. I've done this on the dyno before and after runs. Where did you get your facts from? :P
Bottom end was the same, mid and high rpm lost torque but mid and high gained HP. We're only talking 2-3nm and 1-2hp. The difference is not even noticeable by butt dyno.

The drag strip, times don't lie Neo. And since going 6G75, I've played around with different intake setups, and the stock unit gave the best results so I went back to it.
Doesn't make me wrong and I stand by my statement.

My KL Wagon has a nice crackle to the note under load.
For the RWC the rear pipes out of the back of the muffler were rusted so my local exhaust place welded a couple of straight chrome pipes onto the muffler and it's given it that great crackle tone.

Good shop - most will want to sell you the whole muffler - crackle is probably because the inside is rusted out too, not a bad thing.

Well can't help the Vic plates, lovely day in Gold Coast Qld, might have unnecessarily let loose with the sports wagon, on the upramp at Australia Fair - sounded great, (lots of concrete and echo in 1st gear).. almost as good as the V12 Jag...
