okay so i have a supercat muffler but someone has welded different sized tip on, from the end of the muffler it goes from stock sizeish to about 4 inch with a bent tip on the end of that. i have some spare 2 1/2 inch pipe from my other cars exhaust, wondering if i slice the current tip off the muffler and replaces with a straight section of pipe from the end of the muffler will this change the sound of the exhaust?.
im looking for a tone that isnt just deep and drony (like it is now, its also not too loud either), want a nice crisp sound.
this is the current exhaust

tips wont change anything. invest in a proper exhaust, magnaflow, flowmaster ect, get it welded up for cheap, and enjoy a proper sound, that and some other upgrades and there might be some slight power gains to be had. it might cost a bit but you will be rewarded for that little extra cash you pay to do it properly, hope this helps.

its not just a tip it right from the end of the muffler out, i did that on my mirage and is it sounds insane. i dont plan on spending any more money on the exhaust for this car at all. and i can do wleding myself so i save on labour

the tips or tailpipe don't affect sound at all. you have two options. invest some money, and do it the right and legal way, or take the muffler completely off and make a fool of yourself when you get pulled over. me and just about every other guy on this forum is going to tell you the same thing. you will be either pulling out your wallet and buying proper parts, or pulling out you wallet for the mechanic when you need your defected exhaust fixed

thanks for the honest opinion but as i clearly said, all i did was cut open the exhaust derestricted the inside and put back together with a larger diameter outlet on my mirage and it sounds insanely good. ick up in power, doesnt sound ricey or shit, sounds amazing. everybody that has heard me coming does not think im in a mirage at all. its louder than stock but not stupidly loud that it gains police attention. all the welding and what not was done properly by yours truly, no holes etc. so as for " tips or tail pipe dont affect sound at all" you can inhale my mirages exhaust gas.

Oh, nice attitude!
Changes in your Mirage exhaust sound would have come entirely from what you did to the internal baffling structure, not from the tip.
(But feel free to argue, should make for a great fight, haven't had one of those in this forum for a long time!)

Just changing the tips on my rear muffler from the downward facing stock worked in giving my car a still rather quiet at normal acceleration but a throatier note when going harder.
It also IMO gives the car a little more class.

look if your not happy with the answer, dont ask the question!
Best bang for your money is to get a muffler from the TJ onwards VRX/Sports/GTV/GTVi/GTVi AWD etc as these are straight-through from factory.

Nope that will never happen because it costs money and it has nothing to do with modifying the exhaust sound alteration device aka exhaust tip.
