View Full Version : Low speed wheel shudder

I was turning into a parking spot in the local supermarket yesterday. The wheel was turned around to the right but not hard against the stops and i was just rolling into a spot and there was a very noticeable shudder/judder/shimmy/shake......

Has anyone else had this before? Very low speed - maybe 5kph, going forward with the wheels turned. It doesn't seem to happen with the wheels turned to the left. Oh, the hubs were done around the middle of last year, rotors look to be ok.

Drive shaft or ball joint.
Crank the steering wheel over, jack up one wheel, turn wheel by hand and feel for binding. Check other side, repeat for opposite lock.

Not driveshafts or balljoints then. (still worth checking though).
A brake pad moving about and jamming/unjamming? Got the shims in behind the pads?

...or loose nut in control of the steering wheel. I got it checked today by my local trusted mechanic. He says the shafts, hubs, bearings are all fine, but reckons it might be a combination of very crap tyres and a support bracket with a dodgy bearing that the right hand drive shaft runs through. he's looking for the bracket/bearing assembly so hopefully he'll have one moanday.

i've had enough of the tyres, they're going. What are people putting on these days? I'm not going to go overboard with a performance tyre because i'm doing less than 10,000 a year. My main trips will be through to Brissie once or twice a month and up the coast to go fishing on weekends. other than that just minor urban driving. I walk to work and back every day, so moanday to friday the car sits in the garage.

Any suggestions?

That RHS "support bracket" as you've called it on the driveshaft has two bolts, one easy to get to, one not so easy.

I betcha someone forgot to put the hard one in.

It's a 14mm bolt in case you need to find one...:)

Any idea if it comes as a standalone part or is it integrated with the RHS shaft?

A stand alone part. When it on the car, it has a bearing and 2 oil seals in it. The driveshaft sits in the bearing, a second shaft goes from the driveshaft into the gearbox.

Why? The support arm is a non wearing item, it needs further investigation as to where the problem is. The support arm itself shouldn't need replacing, unless the car has been in an accident and the arm is bent, which is not likely.

Check the bearing in the support arm for up and down play, and the mounting bolts for tightness, if it is a worn bearing, any bearing shop can sell you a new one, provided you can put the old one on their counter.

Even better, it's a replaceable bearing. I thought it might have been an integrated unit.

Mmmm . . . check this thread

from the picture in post #10, it may well be an integrated bearing, unlike earlier Mitsu cars.
Best check your copy of the workshop manual, or visit the dealer and look at their parts book.

Sorry if I have led you astray, Mitsu seems to change designs too often for me to keep up. lol

Yeah, that looks like the apparent culprit. No apologies needed mate. I'll give them a ring moanday and get the good oil and take it from there.
