View Full Version : KH reaches 250,000 k's

Well the KH is certainly long in the tooth at 250k mark!
I'm keeping it fully maintained, and the engine is excellent, transmission is very good, but what should I expect to have to replace coming up?

For instance, how long do brake boosters typically last?
Brake calipers?
Power steering?
Air con compressors?
Shaft cv joints?
Suspension springs? (Although seem fine),
Axle?
Steering seens ok, anything else?

At that km, I'd be checking:

Condition of drive shaft and steering rack boots.
Condition of the two drive belts, and their idlers.
When cam belt was last changed.
Drive shafts for play.
Exhaust system for holes.
Disks, brake pads for wear. Slide pins for lubrication.
Wheel bearings for play.
Steering rack for leaks.
Condition of gearbox fluid.
Alternator output voltage.

. . . but usually, what wears out and what breaks, comes as a big surprise, ie unpredictable. lol

Weekly checks on things is a must for such an old tart! lol

The only other thing I found was the oil filler cap seal has gone.
What about cross member/chassis bolts, do they ever need checking?

So nothing else serious? I guess transmission failure, but it could be rebuilt or swapped out in that case. Engine can be swapped out if necessary too. I think i could find examples around with less k's than mine. But engine and tranny currently seem excellent and as far as I know could go another couple hundred k's without a hitch.

The only serious threat I see then is from rubber bits wearing out in stuff like control arms, linkages and joints and so on. I guess that would progressively degrade the handling, noise and vibration and comfort levels. Electric window failures maybe? ECU? but I think there would be second hand ones in good condition still available.

Front seat springs? Rear seat sponge? Life of the air bags?

What about the distibutor? How long do they last?

When I rebult the distributor I had two other spares to scavenge parts off. Not one of them didn't have a rotor cracked to some degree.

PCV?

One thing that's sooner or later gonna bugger up are the locks. You can stave that off by lubricating with graphite powder. A time will come when they have to be replaced or repaired. Another thing I found when replacing the cat at around 380,000 was the bolts were pretty rotten and the gaskets crumbling.

Drive shafts for play.

- I like to grab the drive shafts near each boot and try to move the shaft up and down, as well as look for rotational play. Gives me an idea of play in the joints.
(Something to do when I'm under there doing an oil change and checking the 6 rubber boots)

Exhaust system for holes.

- Don't know about your model, but both my TL and TJ rotted the pipes through at the top surface of the loop that goes over the rear suspension.
Mufflers were perfect.
(But you will hear that anyway.)

Wheel bearings for play.

- Give the wheels a good up/down left/right wriggle next time they are off the ground.

Steering rack for leaks.

- Torch and shine it behind the intake. They all start to leak at the pressure head of the rack sooner or later. Not a problem, just an indication you need to keep an eye on the fluid level in the reservoir.
