so when I open the passenger side door (front or rear) the interior room lamp doesn't come on. Drivers side doors are ok.

I noticed when I looked at the door switch connectors, on the drivers side there are two wires to the connector, and on the passenger side there is only 1 wire to the connectors. Is that normal or is there a wire missing to the connectors on the passenger side?

I only have TJ wiring diagram which is quite different from TF in this area, but it looks like while all fours switches are 2-pole the second pole is only used on the front doors (or only the driver's door depending on model) to operate the door courtesy lights. Other than a broken wire somewhere which is unlikely my guess would be your passenger side door switches are both cactus, sometimes giving them a jiggle or flicking them in and out may sort them out. Check each switch, with battery connected earthing the single wire for back doors and the same colour wire for fronts (colour is green-red on TJ but may be different for TF) should illuminate the room light.

Thanks for the response. When I unplug the door switch and earth the green and white wire the light still does not come on when the room light is in the "door" position.

I noticed in the harness connector on the side of the passenger footwell there is a green and white wire that I assume comes from the door switch ground, but there is no corresponding wire that it is connected to on the other side of the connector.

I assume that green and white wire should connect up to the room lamp earth?

When you open the door does the icon light up in the dash.

no it doesn't for the passenger door but does for the driver door.

So after hours of trying to decipher workshop manual circuit diagrams and pulling the car apart and continuity testing and voltage testing etc etc it's now fixed.

The green and white ground wire from the passenger door switch runs to a blue connector in the passenger footwell. On the other side of the connector for the G-W wire there is no wire coming out the other side. All this means is that there was no connection between the ground side of the room lamp and the door switch ground.

So I ran a wire from the G-W passenger door switch ground from the blue connector to connector B79 R-W wire (in driver side footwell) which is the ground side for the room lamp.

Interesting. So why do you think it was missing? There seems to be significant differences in the wiring around this area between models and equipment levels, is it possible someone swapped out part of the loom at some stage with one from a different model? The fact that the colour of the earth wires was different on passenger side to driver side seems to suggest this.

yeah I dunno its weird why the earth wire was missing. The wire colours I stated as above are correct, according to the workshop manual. Additionally the wire for the ground coming from the driver side door switch is Yellow (as opposed to G-W for the passenger side).
