View Full Version : How Much To R & R Engine KR/KS

Does anyone know how much time and $$$s to simply swap one 3.0l for another.

I've bought another engine, out of a '93 KR. It came complete with manifolds, plennum etc and in theory should be a pretty straight forward swap.

After seeking quotes from several supposedly reputable workshops in the Cronulla Sutherland area, I'm convinced that these guys don't "see us coming", they just try it on everyone.

All the gear is still on the new engine but the best I've got so far is $550 for the swap and another 4 hours to do the essentials but that was only after calling him on the BS he fed me with an initial quote of 900 - 1000 plus parts.

If I can't find someone to do the complete job I'll have to do the timing belt, water pump, front & rear crank seals and clean out the oil pickup myself as this is all pretty accessable with the engine sitting on the garage floor at the moment. The same fellow who quoted $550 above has quoted another 4 hours to do this work on the aleady removed engine.

My old 89,000 km engine was much abused, no servicing from 10,000km to 80,000 km and has finally sucumbed in spite of the loving care and attention its received since I bought the car.

Thanks for your comments.

directorOut of curiosity, how much did you pay for the engine? The KR engines were different to the
KS engines in that it was all alloy rather than just alloy head.

Wrecker is focusing on commercials and is selling off all his passenger parts cheap. He had 2 but their both sold now. See attached PDF of his tradingpost ad.

Ouch... Mine only had 50,000km of no maintainance...

By then, it was over 200,000km old though.

about $500 seems a fair deal for an engine swap

Both are cast iron blocks. Checked the engine number in my KS owners manual and its the original engine.

Are you saying the alloy block was in the TR/KR or the S series?

Thanks
John

I read in some article a while ago that said that the KR v6's were all alloy engines.

As far as i could find out when i was looking at what coolent to use in my ts is that both the tr and ts v6 engines are cast iron block with alloy head.

I can confirm that both are cast iron blocks.

To remove and refit, depending if is auto or manual, about 5 hours. You have to remember that the workshops are probably quoting at around 75 per hour.

The 4 hours to do cam belt, water pump, front and rear seals is probably about right concidering sump has to come off, there is also cleaning of several parts as I personally refuse to put back dirty parts onto an engine.

I would say around 450.00 for the lot as far as labour goes in a commercial workshop to be fair, I would do this for about 300.00 labour here but I no longer have to pay the overhead of a workshop.

I did lethals car about 10 months ago, also did clutch, welsch plugs, being a 4 did timing chain, all lash adjusters, sump, rear and front seals and valve stem seals, this was bout 350.00 labour all up, engine removed.

how much do u reckon it would cost from a 4cyl to a 6cyl... in a tr... just needa find a 6cl engine and gearbox, and is it that ard to do????? even if i get a recond engine???

LH engine mount has to be moved, then you'll also have the problem of the LH driveshaft will have to be shortened as the 4cyl body was slightly narrower than the V6. Also I cant remember but Im pretty sure mal said you'll need to swap all the crossmembers etc etc.

Not worth the conversion really.

The money you'd spend on it would be comparable to buying a TR/TS V6 exec manual

Now i have a shell here I ahve done all the measurements, the body is the same width, the onlt difference between the drive shaft is the size of the spline on the outer and inner depending again if manual and auto, i have several here and have done the comparisons.

I did this years ago however can not remember having to do anything except move the lh mount as all the running gear from the 6 went into the 4.

As KB said, unless you have a particular good car it is not worth it, get a 6, swap your good bits over and then sell the 4.

As for the topic here, while some workshops charge by the hour some will have a fixed price as it can get too expensive to do if by the hour.

The job is not hard, have done it several times as most Vic ppl here have seen the collection in my back yard lol

To to the welsch plugs while the engine is already out is about another hour or so, just the time to pop the old ones out and fit the new ones.

Eitherway there is no reason why the whole job could not be done in a day if needed

Hey KB, can you please not bother about these useless posts and post something we do not already know LOL (just kidding mate)

being serious though, the guards, bonnet, crossmembers, bumbers, windscreen, infact anything and everything that is bolt on is interchangeable so logic itself would draw us to the conclusion that Dave does not know what he is on about
