View Full Version : Engine Problems
Hey there, i got my magna TF in may this year and it has had one problem after the next. the main problem at the moment is stating it. whan it wants to start it is fine, the revs are ok and stuff seems fine.BUT.....about three times a day now the car wont start. it cranks but wont start and eventually there is a strong smell of petrol. we took it to the dealers to check it out and their computers found no problem.they checked everything and everything came up fine. When i do get it started the whole car shakes and the revs go crazy. occassionally when i drive it ot will just stall and wont start. another problem is when i park it revs up to about 3rpm and wont come down till i turn it off.this only happens occassionally.most of the time the car is perfect. another problem is that the spark plugs have oil on them and i was told to change the gaskets under the rocket cover.
if any one out there knows what could be causing any of the problems PLEASE CONTACT ME. 3DiamondGal

hmm, if the tip of the spark plug has oil on them, it doesn't sound too good  That could be the minor cause for the car not starting, the oil is preventing a spark to be made, and so everytime you try to start the car, more fuel is added into the cylinders which may be why you are smelling fuel (unless there is a fuel leak along the fuel lines).
The cause for the rough (and high speed) idling would most likely be your throttle body and/or ISC motor (controls how much air to allow into the throttle body for correct idle speed).
Though you will need to find out how oil got onto the tip of the spark plug, that would be the long term concern.

I have had a similar problem sometimes in both my te's, with cranking over and not starting, generally it's a change of battery that fixes it.
But I suspect the key your using may be a bit worn out, because the magna's have an inbuilt immobiliser unit, and generally speaking that's what happens when someone tries to steal your car, it just cranks over and over but wont start. So my theory is that the transponder unit in the key is not working correctly, have you tried using your spare key???
Got The Key Checked Out And All Is Fine , Battery Is All Good Aswell. Mitsubishi Cat Fine The Problem Cause The Computer Wont Register That There Is A Problem.
How Did You Get The Dual Exhaust System. My Boyfriends Dad Works At Lukey Their Great Exhausts. How Much Did That Cost To Do? Did You Have To Cut The Back Bumper At All?

if the computer cant register a problem then that may b at fault. an ecu cannot detect a fault in the ecu. if that makes sense

I did'nt have to get the bumper cut out to fit them, but the bodykit is being installed and I had to mark out two spots to cut out of the bodykit, I should have photos by about tuesday for you.
Get your boyfriends dad to install some for you, there fantastic and NO drone, none at all, but when the foot goes down she sounds unreal. :D
Oh and price it through him, cause I aint telling.
Ok it's around the $500 mark depending on the tips you want. There,,,I told.

Actually this is not correct - I recently bought a new key - as a spare part cut for the car it would start the car, but then 2 seconds later the car shut off. Once transponded to the car, it worked as normal. So my point is that even if the transponder is screwed, the key will actually start the car, its just that the car cannot then be driven unless the transponder matches to the car.
I may add that your whole problem sounds like an older 80's Rover that we had - it had a worn out ECU (water had gotten into it) - changing the ECU on that car fixed most of its problems. The other one related to these symptoms - again the Rover - was wear in the fuel pump from some crappy Shell lead Reduced petrol that was around in the later nineties - maybe get that checked out as well.

from what you have said i am thinking you could have a fuel problem, maybe your fuel pressure regulator, if you can smell fuel it would be flooding the engine, the fpr has like a rubber insert inside it which can go and cause fuel to leak straight into you planum via the little vaccum line that connects to your regulator. hense flooding your engine and causing it not to stat
Mitsi sais he ecu wont pick up a specific problem it wont pick up one because as far as the computer is concerned there is no problem, it wont tell you that you have a mechanical failure.
as for the sparkplug problem sounds a little strange, is it the tip of the spark pug which is gettin oil on it or the top of the plug, thinkin maybe you mean the top of the plug or there would be no help to change you rocker gaskets, if so then the plugs to do with your starting problem would have nothing to do with it
anyway, hope that helps
i took it back to the dealership and they got a code on the computer that the key had been turned too fast so they deleted it.that was over a week and a half ago and since then no problems.i used to get this problem 3 times a day and now it just dissapeared. apparently if the computer is holding a fault code, even if the problem is fixed that caused the code, the car can still act up cause the computer still thinks the car has a problem. so much cash waisted when all that needed doing was resetting the computer.

500 isnt so bad mate.. Especially if they have to do mandrel bends for 2 mufflers.. :)
