Greetings All,

I have recently been looking at a TJ VR-X 2000 model but im not sure what to expect from the tiptronic trans. :)

For starters my first thought was that it was slipping when i gutsd it, a mate tells me that its just the trans remembering 'driving style' ... (didnt sound like it remembered much RRRRRRRRNNG)

Secondly it didnt feel very fast at all, do the VR-X have any power increases, etc?

Any thoughts would be appreciated! :bowrofl:

On a different note, i dont want to start a car war but im curious what power/potential to expect from a 5 speed (VR-X) tiptronic setup! - I'm sure a bunch of you guys will jump in with 'get a manual ya fool' but if the difference is tolerable id much rather cruise with tiptronic right now

Thanks!

Did you check that Traction Control (TCL) is turned off before you thrashed it? It will probably cut power to the engine when it detects wheel slipage - probably the sensation you're experiencing....

Mine is a stock 2001 TJ VRX... first gear on triptronic is very very fast... sometimes there is so much power to the wheels that if i turn TCL off, i'm assured of leaving plenty of rubber behind when i slam the gas... Gear changes through the sequence is very smooth. There is definately a sweet spot at around 5000 rpm when it really punches through to just below redline.

You should expect around 163KW/5250rpm, 317Nm - according to Redbook.

As for comparison, the triptronics definately rocks - compared to auto's. Infact my fuel economy is around 11.2L/100km compared to 13.2K/100km on full auto when I drive like a 65 yr old retiree :)

I've dragged Falcon's AU XR6 & XR8's at lights and XR6 are piss weak... and XR8's well... I definately give them a run for their money... Even Commodore VX S are no match for a VR-X (appologies if i have offended)... so in terms of power, i think it's got plenty of guts for a 6 cyl... lucky for Magnas that it's got a nice big ass for the other drivers to look at when you pull away from the lights....:nutkick:

Any other VR-X owners agree?

Any other VR-X owners agree?yeah somewhat.. except a VX S pack is just a Executive with a bodykit :) So of course you will beat it..

Mines sweet. The tippy is excellent. I leave it in auto most of the time.

First gear is very low... for good take offs.

I was of the same opinion as you when i purchased my Sports. I thought if the difference is negligible i guess i'll tolerate it. I've regretted it ever since, i should have waited until i found a manual. Right now as matter of fact my car is in with Mitsubishi because my Tiptronic 'just died'. Automatic transmissions as a whole are fairly unreliable when placed next to their manual twins. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said 'get a manual ya fool'.
Thankyou, this has been 'My 2 Cents'

Sorry to hear that, Flava.

Do you get the auto fluid changed often? They reckon it goes a long way to preserving an a/t. twice as often as the book says. :)

:shock:Oooh, could this be something that was fixed between series 1, 2 ??

Thanks for all your thoughts so far!
More would be appreciated!

I have to agree with Korrupt_1 I have a tj sports(same running gear) and have expereinced this with traccy on never with it off, and there is a big difference between driving in d for drive and in tippy mode.As for what suits you it all depends on what you want if you wanted a cool street dragging car then i would suspect you would nt be lookin at a magna.I am happy with my car but if i was lookin for performance i would say the manuel but in reality it is only about .5 quicker over the quarter mile. And would spend the majority time normal driving which D for drive is excellent for if i am cruising through hills or want a fast take off i just use the tippy. :D :D And although it is a auto it still performs very well. :bowrofl:

yeah.. sometimes I regret getting the tippy.. but not very often. I rarely use manual mode at any time other then tight corners ie. round-a-bouts.. almost never while accellerating. When i ran it at the drags, I used manual, just to get that extra 500rpm past redline out of her.. to beat a VS SS auto with exhaust, but that is about the only occasion.

The way I look at it, is that I spend 90% of my trip to work (40km) cruising in a staight line, where manual has no real advantage, but I had slightly more control then a standard auto when it comes to the windy bits. Plus it makes driving a whole lot easier with a coffee cup in my left hand :D
In short, if you want that race car feel, & are prone to thrashing, go manual. If you want comfort & ease of cruising, go tippy.

Yup i _totally_ concurr!

I want a magna for a nice comfy car.

BUT occasionally its only right to "help" those (stereotypical) common***** drivers with their over inflated ego problems...:slap:

Always happy to help!

Forgive ones ignorance - but how does one turn of Traction Control?

I didnt notice a button in my short excursion in the car

Thanks for the feedback so far guys!

Its the tcl button on the dash it is for trace & traction control. :D

I was in a similar state of confusion when I was buying my VRX. In the end it came to the fact that since I would be driving into the city a lot (Sydney) I couldn't stand the 1-2-1-neutral shuffle for an hour at a time so I went the tippy. Only very rarely do I regret not getting the manual but I figure I would be regretting not getting the tippy more often if I was sitting in peak hour traffic.

Most of the time I leave it in D but it is certainly nice to be able to go manual when you need it (burning off fords, falcons etc). It's the best of both worlds I reckon.

But really it comes down to personal choice. I've had absolutely not problems with the tippy but I know of at least a couple of members that have.

Good luck with your choice.

Ignorance forgiven :doubt: :D

The TCL button is on the dash, just above the ignition key on the right hand side behind the steering wheel - near the dash light dimmer. It's a rectangular button with TCL printed on it. When pressed, a green TCL light should show up somewhere on the dash - indicating that TCL is now OFF - which means it's rubber burning time!!

Serriously, I think the tippy is a pretty good balance between comfort and performance. I'll never perform like a true manual, but atleast you can 'drink your coffee' while you're driving to work... It scores a 8/10 from me...

Ah Gotcha's!

*mental note for the next test drive... switch to burn rubber mode *

Cheers fellas!

I think id be more than happy with tip-tronic!
Methinks i'll just start test driving both manual and tippy and wait for a real nice one!

Thanks again.. w00t

tippy auto is a buet compromise between comfort and relaxed cruising and having the control when u need it. BUT the autos cant take a lot of power thru them, so if u start developing the engines potential, u get to a point where the auto trans holds u up as the weak link. and u need to spend big $$$ to strengthen it.
this is my problem now, i cant use the full power without stressing the trans and causing slip on upshifts, the ecu then detects the slip and protects the trans by sending the tune into a "limp mode". and mine is only 3.0,
so if youre only planning to keep it stock or just minor mods the tippy is fine.

Are extractors classified as minor mods?

yes, it seems about 200kw gets too much for the trans.

yes, it seems about 200kw gets too much for the trans.Thats a quote from Mitsubishi..

The tiptronics should beable to handle a bit more as you can select/hold the gears when changing..

Mod restrictions!!! eek how rude!!!

How well do the manual boxes hold there own then???

Can we upgrade the tippy boxes?

That said... how many limbs will it cost? :doubt:

u only need to look at the turbo guys to see how tuff the manuals are! booya and mitsiman pumping 250-350kw through em... :

auto can be strengthened, around 1500-2000$ but if your planning a turbo to go over 250Kw then the manuals the only way.

Aaaah fair enough.

Hmmm does anyone know anything about the gearbox and engine modifications made to the TJ models, ie MYO2 and SERIES II ?

Something to do with engine and gearbox im told... hmm

*continues googling*

FFS Why can't i find any at that price. All the ones I've found are around 23-24.
The salesman at Orix (VRX 80,0000 kms) wouldnt go any lower than $21,500. And there is no way I'm paying that much for that many Kms.

I'm actually considering getting a VT calais or charged S pack from the auctions if I can't find a manual VRX for a reasonable price within the next few weeks. :(

 Awww most salesmen are  i guess

I've been looking for a few months, its the first manual vr-x ive found so far!

every other car ive found was severely overpriced like the ones you found!

goodluck dude!

I'm in Vic but I'm fairly willing to travel interstate to purchase. I'm finding it damn hard without a car. Have to borrow work F100 or dads patrol, and the F100 isnt exactly small. lol.
