Hey, I just picked up a 1999 TH Sports Manual with 96,000 on the Clock for $15,500 (the major Service has already been done by the Dealer :D ) so im stoked about that for starters! However, I wanna put some new Rims on it and am looking at some 19" x 8.5" with 235 Tyres. The Stud Pattern and everything is right for the Magna I just want to make sure that 8.5" Rims will Fit! I know 19" x 8" will Fit so i dont see 8.5" being an Issue just wanna make sure! Cheers

they should fit,

but yes, make sure you can get them insured. also TH didnt come with 17s yes or no? anyway, make sure you can get the insurance sorted, cos in case of an accident, and they see you have 19's that isnt listed on the policy, then your f-ked. they may not pay out.

Ben.

Pretty sure 17's first showed up on the VR-X. Rim width is the other issue.

Nice purchase and welcome to the club.

The wheels should physically fit but others know more about that than I do. I would suggest doing a couple of things.

1. Check out the RTA/QLD transport equivalent for SA. They should have a section on what's allowed in SA. Look it up in the phone book or do a google search. Any references to 'original size' means what's on the tyre placard. It lives on the bottom of the drivers door frame.

2. Check the offset of the wheels. Your car will be 46P (stamped on the outside of your steel wheel or inside a mag) Any higher than 46 and they probably won't fit never mind be legal. Most states won't allow less than 34/33P (sometimes referred to as ET+33 or ET+34)

3. The major problem with huge wheels is finding tyres. Magna's have a load rating of 94 or if really unlucky 95. It's on your tyre placard. No state will allow you to go less than this. Neither willl an insurance company.

4. Don't just tell your insurance company that you have new wheels. Ask them what they allow from a legal point of view. They'll insure anything you put on the car and pay out if it gets nicked from your driveway. They will take a different attitude if you have an accident and they decide that the tyres/wheels were involved. They will be quite happy to say "I'm sorry but your brand new 93 load rated tyres have voided your policy. If you sell your house, family and a kidney you can pay this law suit no problem."

Have fun!

Finally, care to tell us which wheels you're getting?

Congrats on new purchase :D

as for rims and tyres

Make sure they are legall in vic 2" big diameter and 1" wider is Legal for RWC but in with most insurace companies 1' wider is un-insurable.

Some also have 7' as the max, like NRMA. That meant that me going from 6' to 7' was fine.

Cheers for the replies guys. In response to Booya, no the TH didnt come with 17"s it has 16"s so yes 19"s would not be legal straight away. I did know this but 19"s just look awesome! hehe. I spose 18"s would be more reasonable since one they would be legal, two cheaper and three i wont have the ass ripped out my pants wheneva i need new tyres! I was looking at 19" Fusion Rims Rockmag check em out here http://www.tempetyres.com.au/products_closeup.asp?part=Shadow+Chrome&part_no=539

if u wanna be legal i would suggest u go with 17x7 rims with proper load rating of 95 (well mine has load rating of 95 im pretty sure all execs do)

if u wanna do what i am, playing with insurance :shifty: and getting 18x8.5 rims then u still prolly wouldnt be ale to find tyres with a load rating equal to or higher then 95 nor would they be legal/insurable

i have a debate in my mind about this lol, i keep thinking i should just get 17x7 but then so many ppl still keep them legal (using tyres not designed for 17x7 but will still fit and getting tyres that are 95+ load rated) or just going all out and getting 18's which would look cooler :) mind u there so much other stuff on my car that if insurance didnt wanna pay out they could prolly use these things to void my policy (unless i can swap them all when i get home and/or smash them up at crash site :shifty: )

moral of the story, dont drive ur car anywhere and u wont crash and u wont have to worry about insurance :D

would just like to take this opportunity to say that mitsubishis idea of load ratings are retarted. How can they justify a load rating of 94 on a 1450kg car when the xr6 turbothat weighs 1700kg has a load rating of 91!

or how about the HSV senators getting around that are near 2000kg yet still only have a 91 rating !!! :doubt:

DAMN YOU MITSUBISHI WHY DO YOU HATE US SO MUCH!!!!

Except the Tyre and Rim Association handbook doesn't allow any tyres to fit that rim that meet the load rating.

Is that why the VR-X has 17x7's with a LR of 94?

Yes, that is why Mitsu dropped the TJ load rating to 94. Mitsu also dropped the load rating to 94 with either the TE or TF was the current model and there was a tyre shortage on the ones they would usually use. Just shows what a farce their load rating choice is.
