View Full Version : The Grey Ghost's sick!
The TP has an oil leak in the sump. I found this out the hard way.
As a result, the timing chain's replacement will be bought forward by some 10,000km.
Besides the obvious chain kit, engine crane and a free weekend, what else is needed, and what else should be done whilst the motor is out of the car?

double check that the oil pump is ok. if u are not sure, replace it anyway. even if u get a high performance aftermarket oil pump which is around $170. (the mitsu replacements are close to $500) umm, dont just replace the chains cause they will usually be perfect anyway. its the tensioners that will b shot. wat u need is a full chain and tensioner kit from somewhere. i got my kit from repco for $217. also, check the cogs that the chains sit on to c if they are ok. if not, a kit to replace the WHOLE assembly is over $500 from repco!!!!
other than that, clean everything very thoroughly. replace all gaskets (sump gasket, as u should clean out ur sump so that wen u put in ur new oil it wont have a chance to mix with any old oil). a VRS gasket kit (can b ordered through supercheap for around $80) is a very good set of gaskets. this kit includes all gaskets u are gunna need and is cheaper than buying each gasket separately. i cant think of anything else at the moment as i am kinda drunk but hey, i hope wat i have said helps.

tie it to your leg and drop it into the ocean? ('it' can be substituted for any heavy object)

As for an engine crane, what are you intending to hang your self as the chain can be done in car.
PS i have moved this thread to the correct place, tech for first gen

IT CAN!?! :bowrofl: Um how, I didnt think you could get to the tensioners with the engine installed. I've heard of "No tentioning required" type tentioners on the newer engines, Can this be retrofitted?
teehee madmagna went on a cleaning spree in this thread, ive also heard from numerous people that your blocks gotta be pulled out.

Although fiddly the entire job can be done with the engine in the car without any problems. You will need to remove the LH mount, lift the engine up a bit to remove the bolts that hold the bracket on the front of the engine on, from there it is not hard, remove the 4 bolts that hold the air con compressor on ( do not undo pipework) remove sump, rocker cover, harmonic balancer, timing cover etc, ( not in this order lol).
Be careful when you put the timing cover back on as the front of the head gasket, which only seals oil, be sure to put a bit of sealant on this area
