View Full Version : CAI piping, what did you use and where did you get it?

My mate and I had a bit of a play under the hood of my car, removing the battery and plastic battery casing and stock cold air scoop to see how easy a pipe could fit through. We cut bits of the stone chip guards/plastic crap away and just to test things we used a flexible 90mm drainage pipe and we were able to fit it from the filter box to the exposed hole at the bottom of the front bumper (took the little grill peice out).

Then put everything back in and proved that it all fits. So now im on the hunt for suitable 80-90mm smooth and preferably flexible piping.
What did other people use and where did they get it from?

this is the hole i meant by removing the little grille peice. That white pipe u see is a little 90mm into 100mm plumbing pipe squeezed into there. Naturally it will be painted black when finished

if you have the time - use PVC and a heat gun. It will mould into pretty much any shape plus there are all the premade angles and fittings to help. I cant think of any flexible tubing that doesn't have ribs as the ribs stop it from closing when bent.

There is another thread somewhere around here about this.. contains many pics and comprehensive instructions etc..

Think it was entitled DYI - CAI or something like that

And as for using PVC pipe.. I think you might be on a winner... get down to your local plumbing shop and grab a coupleof metres. As suggested I would also try bending it using heat, instead of using the premade elbows etc. If bending it works out it would be less restrictive than using the premade bends.

But if bending doesn't go that well then the bends would still be fine.

How are you going to mate it to the air box? Are you just going to take the front of the box off? You could probably heat and bend or get another box from a wreckers and try to join some of the scoop and pipe for better union.

i said it in another thread, but a pot of boiling water was used to bend the end of the pipe into an oval shape which slotted straght into the airbox. Then i used some black silicone sealant around the edges. Im still deciding what to do with the pipe coming out of the bumper. I was thinking of modifying the grille bit i have taken out by cutting in between the holes, then putting it back on, but im not sure if that will defeat the purpose of CAI in the first place?

anyways i will take pics today and post :)

I hate how you 3rd gen's have it easy with CAI, us 2nd gen owners have an airbox that sits the opposite to yours  so that it faces downwards instead of outwards (if that makes sense). I wonder if it would be easy to change this though lol

Tim E,

Nice work on the box union! :bowrofl: I have a heat gun and hack saw on stand-by. Dropped into a local plubming warehouse today and have to re-evaluate my project. You can nearly make the complete unit from off-the-shelf fittings in any gauge! Lots of tight angles to keep the airflow nice and high, instead of short, sharp bends.

I have a TF 3L Man and a K&N Panel too. Makes a sweet hell of a difference. I can smoke in third with 15" wheels. I imagine the CAI has has a good run-in now. Can you notice any difference?

Cheers.

i am positive it has made a difference, especially at night. I'm not sure whether it is just me but it definetely feels more torquey too

I have a similar setup to yours, and I too recon it makes a small improvement :P

Is keeping the stock airbox with the CAI better than taking out like in previous posts?
