Hey Guys

I got my car serviced the other day just done 75000kms! :D

Something i noticed, there is an incredible change in the rate of fuel consumption before and after service;

Before Service : 1 Full Tank would give ~400km
After Service : 1 Full Tank gives me ~650km!!!

Am i seeing things?? :nuts:

I'm in Perth by the way, I do only city driving, wat kind of consumption are all you guys gettin with your magna's? Especially you Perth Boys??

With our car services as you probably know (i hope you know) it is every 6 months or 15000Ks, when I had my last service done it was suppose 2 be pretty major, spark plugs, trans fluid etc but in the 6 months I had only racked up 7500Ks. The mechanic (who we know really well) said not to worry bout the whole lot, he'll do the oil etc and do the sparks and everything else at the next service.

In about 12 days the 6 months is up and I have almost racked up the 45000ks, you can tell the spark plugs are showing wear n tear.

I do alot of start stop driving, depending on how and where I drive I sit anywhere between 11-14 L per 100 clicks. So I get no less than 400 clicks out of a tank, general between 4-5 hundrend clicks.

Going to be booking my car in for a service in about a weeks time so it will be interesting to see.

i got a new TL magna, i normally get around 400k doing very heavy city driving (i use my car to do courier work), if i drive my car just like a normal car though i can get around 550ish out of a tank.. and on the highway i have gotten 780k and it was still going when i filled up :D

That's a huge difference ... did they change anything during the service?
I would expect a moderate improvement in fuel consumption but 400 to 650 is a ... 62.5% increase which is almost ridiculous.
I'm gonna be bringing my car in for a service for the first time since I've gotten it, so it will be interesting to see how much difference that makes. ATM, I'm getting about 450-500 on probably 85% of the tank.

Is that what your actually getting or what your computer says because (i dont know if you do or not) if you dont reset your computer when you fill up it could be quoting old driving data and maybe when you got it serviced they reset the computer.I dunno just guessing but it seems like a big difference from a service :)

could be something like your fuel injection system was all clogged up or some of your sparkies wherent working effectively.. Theres a few things that could effect your fuel economy. In my experience the best way to ensure your car is running as efficiently as possible is to first run some fuel injector cleaner through a tank of petrol, and then from then on always fill up with shell optimax or bp ultimate petrol. Thats how i use to always run my commodore when i had it and it always ran great. My TL will always run on 98 octane fuel for as long as i own it anyway. The petrol is just so much cleaner and it has stronger cleaning agents in the fuel then normal 91 octane fuel does.

Theres something i bet you didnt know, all fuel has cleaning agents in it, thats why i formula one car will not run on normal fuel because its designed to run on strieght petrol, and if you where to run a normal car on the fuel that forumla one cars use your car would die after about 10 000k's cos of the lack of cleaning agents..

hld the mode button for a few secs until you hear 3 beeps

it has to be on one of the screens that monitor stuff though, if you hold it down on the odomoter screen then nothing will happen

the button is not on the odometer screen.... its jjust on the left of the steering wheel... hold the mode button and it will reset the trip computer...

And ALSO.... i went to fill up today, and my trip computer says i can only get 350k's out of the tank!!!?!?! is that suppose to be right??

I have pacemakers and muffler on... it should affect that much should it?

i think ppl are getting abit caught up with the trip computer. it really is just a cheap and simple piece of device. it is pre-programmed and has no complicated sensors of any sort. how it works is that it takes note of your revs and associated gear ratio and puts them in a pre-programmed formula and spits out some numbers. this is not to say it is not accurate. it does give you a fairly good idea of fuel consumption etc. the best way to get the most accurate reading out of your trip computer is to reset it everytime at top up. if you don't, the average mileage from previous tanks of petrol will still be in there and that is how some ppl get '350 kms' remaining even after putting in a new full tank.

You'll have to drive it around for abit for the trip computer to accurately determine the fuel levels and your average speed.

Right now my trippie says i can do 450km with three quarters of a tank! How true that is well we'll soon find out (city driving).....

My trip computer (km's to empty) has been pretty close to spot on whenever i fill up the tank completely and reset it.

When the tank is only partially filled the computer is a bit off and always overestimates the km's to empty.

no i mean that if you hold the trip reset button down while it is displaying the odo screen then it wont reset, then i remembered that i have a TL and you are probably talking about an earlier model one where the ODO is separate from the trip computer, TL's its all together.

As for 350k's to a tank, it always goes off your average fuel economy, so if you dont reset your trip computer when you fill up then it might be going off an old economy reading, hence only 350k's to the tank. Mine is normally very optimistic when i first reset it and says something like 580k's to the nearest fill.. then after about 10k's of driving it lowers to about 450k's. As i said before, i normally get around 450 from a tank so though the trip computer isnt isactly scientifically accurate, it does give you a fairly ok idea of whats goin on

After my 45k service
my average fuel consumption went from 12l/100km
to 11.3 bye the trip computer
both those readings were done after well after 1000 km of readings

City driving: 1L => 7.2km
Highway driving: 1L => 11.9km

Something that hasn't been said, is that when they did the service they may have disconnected the battery or manually reset the ECU. This resets the fuel system back to factory settings and is now delivering fuel at a normal rate. It will take a while for it to adapt back to your heavy footed driving style and start delivering fuel in bucket loads lol

hey guys,
this is my first post. i find that the trip computer (TH 3.5 magna) is useful but always a conservative little thing. i usually add up my distance travelled and fuel in litres then work it out myself. a recent country trip saw 8.9lts per 100km (using optimax) but i find if you drive it easy it gives 700km to an entire tank (91 RON) which the trip computer backs up, but give it a bit and that will quickly change.
