Yup over the past 3-4 months my timing chain has rattled when i first start the car, then it became more and more frequent. From what i can tell is that it only does it at low rpm, and you cant hear it at high rpm. Now my question is this, is this a BAD thing, like an urgent problem needing to be fixed? or should i wait til it gets worse. Cuz i knew a guy with a TP who had the rattle for over a year before he had it fixed and his car was fine. Its not really bothering me, except when i pull up at the lights and you can hear the rattle echoing into the car when the windows are down, ppl just laugh at my car LOL :P , and i dont really feel anything bad happening, the car is running smoother than when i bought it.

Get it done if it is rattling at idle.
generally it is the balance chain that rattles, if this goes you have no oil pump. If the main chain goes you have not cam and a lot of bent valves

well i had major rattling when i bought my car,
got told to do it and never did it, it's been two years already and it's gone,
all i did was experiment with oil types.
solution :
Helix Sport Semi Synthetic 20w40
although i still get some rattling when i start my car but it wont make any noise when im at idle.

i got my chains done about 6 months ago. The guy who did it did a lot of other things in the engine as well as the chains. replaced worn peices here and there, etc. cost me a $1K.

Ok, firstly anytime the chain goes on these 4 cyl motors you end up (depending on whether it is balance or timing chain) with major chain slap that chews out the guides, and eventually the chain just jumps cogs and you end up with nasty damage. I have replaced a few of these on sigma/magna models and usually the more noise, the more damage. The chain guides are about $250 and a quality set of chains $100. $50 for a manual and if you are not familiar with the repair allow 1 day strip down and 1 day put back, otherwise 1 day in total (approx)
I tend to take my time etc. Otherwise about $1000 for a mecho.
I have found on a couple of occasions the chain has simply stripped the adjuster and a simple replace, however the longer you have left it, the more ya gotta do

The chain can also chew out the cover as well. The TR is one of the hardest to do,I usually remove the motor in the manuals as it is an easy job. There is a bolt on the front bracket that hits the chassis rail, besides being tight it is not too hard, just fiddly.
The last kit I got, with guides and chains was around $150.00
About a year ago I did Lethals car, did clutch, welsch plugs, lash adjusters, valve stem seals, timing chain, all gaskets and seals, all water and vacum hoses erc, engine is like new

i sell cars for a living and see this all the time on older magna`s, its the noise thats doing most of the damage to your ego, its a job that you wont get any change out of $800 when you drop it off at your local mechanic, i would leave it to long cause anything that noisy cant be good for its health...
