View Full Version : Engine dampers and shuddering in manuals

A problem that quite a few owners of manuals seem to have is shudder when riding the clutch in situation like parking etc. I think part (or all) of the problem is the soft engine mounts which don't control any vibration initiated by the clutch. Although my car doesn't do it all the time, it has done it since new so it isn't a problem caused by wear or age. Urethane engine mounts would probably fix the problem but they increase noise, vibration, harshness (NVH)
Apparently this is a problem on other cars as well as Magnas. The RX7 has the same problem and is supposedly fixed by fitting an engine damper strut like this.......http://www.rxecret7.com/feedfd-tqbrace.html
I've also heard the east/west orientation of FWD cars exhasibates this problem so fitting a damper may be just the trick
Seems to make sense. Anyone know any more about this subject??

Here's another type which uses a solid rod and urethane dampers. Don't think it's as good though :doubt:
....and another http://www.rotaryextreme.com/enginebrace.html

mine shudders 2 !!!!!except not at park etc. at around 110 its the only time it happens  thought it was the wheel balanced but the steering wheel doesnt shudder the whole front does :doubt:

I think that the engine dampers also reduce the strain on engine mounts. I'd get one if they weren't to pricey

I would definatly be interested in one as the VRX does it occasionaly when taking off slow or parking etc. It apparently gets worse when using heavy duty pressure plates and clutches etc.
I saw one fitted to an 180SX using an SR20 and spoke to the owner breifly about it. As he was using a multiplate clutch taking off was brutal and since fitting the damper it stopped the sudder alot and also stops the engine from moving as much when under load (which doesn't put as much stress on the engine mounts).
If there was one that would fit our cars i would definatly get one.

Yeah, I've seen them on GTRs too. Looking at how they're set up, I think it would be pretty easy to fabricate brackets so they would fit any car. It's basically just a damper attached to the engine and engine bay.
The price seems to be around the US$230 mark but I reckon I'd pay that if it fixed the problem :D

I would definatly pay that as it would save you that much in the long run instead of constantly replacing engine mounts as we know mitsu's are far from durable. I should know i've already had 2 replaced under warranty.

A possible source of these could be motorcycle steering dampers ... the ones used to stop tank slapping events ;).
I might try and source one and give it a go.
I would like to fix the 1st and 2nd gear torque release (when hitting the clutch for the next gear whilst going hard) its like a major thud! :) this could be the answer (along with the clutch shudder fix)

That's not a bad idea. I guess it just depends on whether or not they'd have enough of a damping effect. Do they come in different damping settings like shocks??

Definately interested, keep this thread updated or maybe we can organise some sort of group buy.
