Hey guys :(

My engine is making a ticking noise and i dont know what it is

it sounds like its coming from the top of the engine the manifold area?
does any1 have any idea what it could be, the more i rev the faster the ticking gets

im thinking it may need an oil change,
or the one of the plugs have gone.. i dont know :(

any1 got any idea?

have you checked your oil?

does it lack power. ie missfire?

Is it a manual? If so, does it happen when it's in neutral and foot is off the clutch peddle?

could be a number of things i guess.....

1. clogged injector
2. Worn hydraulic lifters? im not sure about this cos i dont think they go louder with the revs

also there was an article somewhere on old oil getting clogged in a valve which made a ticking sound and how to fix it......it was like easing the throttle all the way to 3grand over a time of 15 seconds and then letting it off and repeating it like 20-30 times.....it supposedly unclogs the valve of old and gritty oil

other than that thats all i have to say

im in an auto,

the ticking gets faster as i accelerate
there is no loss in power however

mine makes a noise when it idles with the foot off when i change the gearbox oil it dissapears then comes back in 4000 k as long as oil is free i keep changing it,

just hold the engine on rev limiter and see what happens ;) it will clean your injectors ;)

check your engine oil, is it worse when cold?

AussieMagna

Its definatly the head.

So my guess would be either the valve springs or hydrolic lifters.

Check your oil level. If it doesn't go away have it looked over by your local trusted mechanic.

Id say about 3L

At ur next service think about putting Mobil 1 in, its fantastic.

Don't mix your oils if possible. If your not sure what oil you have, drain it and put a drum of new oil in. Mobil 1 definatly reccomended!

Mitsubishi has problems with lifters on a few engines , but look if your chaning the oil change the filter its about $6 its not worth leaving the old one on there.

And what the **** is with the sugestions about it being the gearbox or clutch ? honestly i worry about you blokes

did your car originally have mobile 1 in it ? you shouldnt mix oil type or viscosity ( i never could spell that word )

If yours a 3.5L I think it takes in excess of 4 Litres in the oil pan...

They're actually the Valve Stem Collets.

And yes they tick when you're low on oil

They can also get sticky even when you have oil in your car.

When I get my puter back and working..I'll dig up the article I used to have with the info on how to flush out the oil that may be stuck in it.

Actually...It goes like this:

Warm the car up.

Slowly accellerate (in neutral) to 3000rpm in 15 seconds,
then as soon as you hit 3000rpm and 15 seconds pull your foot off fully, let it drop to idle.

Let it idle for 15 seconds, then repeat the 30 second cycle

You may have to do this from 5-30 times. If after 30 times the ticking hasnt gone, then that's not the problem. But it cant hurt to flush it out :)

The article I had went into much more detail on why this happens and stuff...I'll post it as soon as I can...possibly give it to Blake so he can put it in the tech section

Mine ticks and I'm sure it's the clutch or flywheel assembly. :p

Yes - but yours is ticking cos it is a manual and the thrust bearing is loose.

However - in your case - the ticking is coming from a different part of the engine bay and when u put your foot on the clutch it should go away. and the higher the revs - should have no impact on your noise. Also when it is in gear you shouldn't hear the noise.

Autos don't have this problem.

starts to tick the valves are going? nah man that aint the case...hydraulic lifters wear out and nead to be replaced.....the older cars had tappets which u got tightened but new cars are all hydraulic etc.....i think he has mistaken a different kinda noise

Raymond_C
25-06-2003, 05:32 PM
TST don't you mean older cars had SOLID lifters? 'Tappet' refers to both types of lifters - hydraulic & solid.

The noise is probably due to the lash being outside of tolerance (between the lifter & valve stem). Good ole Gregory's Automotive Mechanics Fundamentals (best damn $40 I spent in '94)... :D

Tappet noise can also refer to incorrect lash adjustment between valve stem and rocker arm - my 'Rolla has a wicked lash noise from #1 cylinder - unless you're pulling 3000+ RPM it is louder than the engine! I have to get the Gregory's for mine and adjust it up.

The RACQ dude who inspected my car before purchase said that I had some light mechanical noise. I'm thinking that it's the lifters. It hasn't sounded as it's got any worse and I've had it for 43,000km's.

MethoD that's crap.

Ticking doesnt mean your lifters are going to die.

I explained what it is before.
My car is 256,000 kms old and it's never had lifter problems...just the ticking that we've talked about but all I did was the 30 second cycle thing and it's been fine.

They're not dying...that's wrong

Yeah i know, every1 is making such a big fuss!

The engine was running REALLY low on oil,
i fixed the problem the ticking stopped straight away

the car is fine
