hey i am getting a 1997 Magna TE or TF and it has the normal analog dash (speedo, tacho) and i was wondering if there is anyway to upgrade this to a digital one like in the later models? I just want the digital trip and Fuel consumption? it also has that spot above the radio that looks like it should have a LCD screen in it,
thanks

mate the place with above the air vents which you think should have an LCD screen is is where the trip computer (digital trip and fuel consupetion etc) is on all models from TE to TJ.
The only model which has the trip computer in with the speedo and tacho is the TL and the new TW model, and you probably could get the instrument cluster from a TL or TW into your car, but it would probably be more trouble then its worth because on TL and TW magnas the trip computer also includes the ODO, and with yours the ODO is separate and i think it would just be too hard mate.

I beg to differ, not all TJ's trip comp is above the vents, as my '02 TJ AWD trip comp etc is below the speedo and tacho and the space above the vents is blank except for the seatbelt symbol.

Yeh, my TJ 02 exec has the computer below the speedo and tacho, above the vents is some warning lights and the like...

yeah from memory, the TJ MY02 were the first models to have the digital ODOMETER, and possibly also the first model where the trip computer was moved to the same screen in the cluster.
It was also the first series with the whole lineup coming with a tiptronic shifter.

so it would be too much trouble? like the wiring harness's wouldn't be there? :( damn
also is the place above the middle console that looks like a lcd is the trip computer is it? when i turn the car on nothing comes up? and i asked the owner and apparently the only thing that has ever appeared was a petrol symbol when it was getting empty... so there definatly should be a trip computer there? if so do i have to turn it on? or if it doesn't have one there can i put one in there?
thanks

if your car is fitted with a trip computer it would come on automatically, you obviously dont have one unfortuantely. And yes sorry to say but it really would be more trouble then its worth hooking one up (feel free to correct me if im wrong) because unless wiring is already there for it, its going to be one big massive pain in the arse to get it all hooked up because it all runs off your engine computer. sorry mate, but your really not missing that much.. i find its only really usefull for the "gee wiz.." factor

I think alot of the TE's didnt have anything there other than the petrol and maybie the battery ? maybie some had like a option to have a speed alarm etc, but i have never seen it.. anyway i know the TF's have a Speed alarm there and the TH has all the other stuff like average fuel, average speed, etc etc.. then in the 02 TJ they went to where the speedo was and they cosisted of the ODO and trip computer... my 2c
