Hey all...

Need some audio advice with a TJ Executive. I have already upgraded the rear 6X9's with alpine 3 way's, making a big difference over the stock speakers, but I also want to put in a subwoofer - I used to have a competition system (600W+ class) in my old car, so I have no shortage of gear, but this is kind of the problem - I am used to a 15" subwoofer, but in a car as well sound-proofed as the magna, I think that this is some serious overkill - I also have a Kicker 12" freeair, mounted in a ported box - it sounds pretty sweet, and would fit perfectly in the hole in the back seat...

The concept of this car is to be a totally stealth system - ie. running on the stock CD player, stock speaker locations - and nothing visible either when the boot is opened - had a car broken into for this reason in a shopping centre carpark - someone saw subs and amplifiers when I opened the boot to put some shopping in I reckon, and decided to open the boot with a screwdriver in the lock and remove all of the gear they could carry, as well as putting the screwdriver through the subwoofer cone when they tried to remove it as well. So, this rules out rear firing speakers and visible amplifiers. Also needs to be a lot lighter than the last system, which weighed in at around 70Kg! (ouch!)

OK - what I wanted to ask...

1) The stock headunit - does it have RCA outputs? I really want to avoid high level stuff due to the distortion component.
2) Is there any way to stop those ****ing front doors rattling? Noisekiller blue? Crossovers? :)
3) Is there a factory amplifier external to the head-unit? It drives those speakers pretty darn well, suprising... I know my old car did.
4) Has anyone mounted amps under the seats successfully?
5) Any reccomendations for decent front splits? I have alpine in the rear, may as well in the front...

Thanks for any help people can give me, I also have a lot of stuff for sale (a 15" JL 15W1 in a box for example - nice bit of kit) so if you need amps or anything else... just ask.

Cheers

Ok - Lets see if i cant start u off with a few things:

Good Alpine splits - a mate of mine had the Alpine DDDrive splits in his falcn - though they are smaller than what the magna can fit.

I personally have Boston Accoustic Rally Edition splits in my factory locations.

The stocko unit doesnt have RCA outputs and for memory it doesnt have a factory amplifier either.

Mounting Amps under seats - depending on the size and power -as u would be aware they can get hot - I have a 600watt RMS 4 channel amp in the boot - only cos she heats up and wont fit under a seat!!

Apart from that I think that is all I can help you with!!

Id mount the sub in that spot on the rear parcel shelf... My TE had a screw cover for it that was easy to remove... My TH Sports has it all solid no hole but place for the hole (if you know what I mean)... Id then place the amp up under the rearshelf on a board... Wouldnt be seen then..
Or you could make up some side pannels for the rear of the boot, but put the amp on the outside.. ie cannot see them ...
My front speakers had been modified and the guy had mounted them on a bit of board insttead of screwing them straigh into the plastic on the door... this may help with thte rattle.

Hmmm...I had the same problem...I wanted mine to look factory standard as well.

Yeah...like above...the stock unit in TJ's doesn't have RCA's

I was advised not to put the amps under the seats (purely for heat reasons).

In the rear parcel shelf, there's a hole you can cut out (you'll know it when you see it) to mount a 10" sub in there, but I don't think there are many 10" free-air subs available???

I ended up getting custom boxes made for my subs and putting them in the rear corners of the boot. They're not as noticable there, but I guess if the right person was looking they would know.

Maybe you could make up a backing across the back of the rear seat to hide a small 10" sub box and amp...then just cover it with same sort of carpet?

Yep...you're right! My brother worked at MMAL up until a couple of years ago, and he thought it was only around 8" or so. The TE's and a metal bracket that screwed over the hole, but the the TJ's don't have that anymore. When I found out , I though bugger it....if I cut the entire hole (not just the indented part), I could chuck a 10" in there 8)

But, having 2 12" is much better anyway. Man you have a 15" as well....I'm so jealous    I thought about it for a while, but I wanted to keep my spare wheel! Where did you mount it?

Hey Redav: I mounted my tweeters in the round cover in dash, but I got all of the mounting stuff plastic dyed to match the color of dash so it wouldn't look too "aftermarket". You can still tell they aren't factory fitted, but it's a lot better than having them all black! How do your tweeters mount? Maybe you could do that too...only costs $25 from a dash place...but makes a big difference in appearance :)
