Today in the morning when I started the my magna (which was parked in covered garage) it made a strange noise in the engine for copule of seconds only and i am pretty sure it was pistons running dry.

I have heard that noise few times now since I have changed the engine oil from Mobil-1 (full synthetic) to Penrite HPR 15 (semi-synthetic).

Just wondering is it a common thing???

or 15W -60 is too thick and I should be using 10W or 5W in semi-synthetic.???

I service the car regularly at 7,500 k's (with oil + filter change). I also noticed an instant change in the running of the car as it was running a bit hard and even my wife noticed that too and the exhaust note has also been a bit more growling too since then.

at 22,500 Mitsu did the service and used castrol Magnatec and to me it was perfectly fine no problems at all. then at 30,000 i used Mobil 1 wich was brilliant and running was smoth as , just abit too expensive. so i decided to move back to semi synthetic at 37,500 and used Penrite HPR 15W (after engine flush).

my next service is due end of next months as car is at 43,200+ so should I gamble with magnatec (semi synthetic) or instead use full-synthetic to be on the safe side.

need help and/or expert opinions.

Thanks.

15w-60 is to thick, i use HPR 5w-40 with no problems. The 60 part is the problem.Even a 15w-40 would be fine.

I have always used MAGNAtec in my magnas and they always seem to run fine. I have tryed the expencive synthetic stuff but it doesnt run as nice.

After having been a die hard MAGNAtec user i've decided that a change and a little experimentation is in order. I've bought myself a shiny new bottle of Penrite HPR-10 (btw why does it seem severyone around here uses HPR-15, when Penrite specifically recommend HPR-10) and am about to put it in as soon as the engine cools off a little, i dont imagine that scalding oil is fun to get on your skin.
I drive my car at least 120 kms a day so it seems i'm always changing my oil. At this point in time i'm keen to keep you all updated, but i change my mind almost as much as i change my oil.

I bought my oil from autobarn at their preston store opening and they have some lady from Penrite there who recomended me HPR15 and told me that HPR10 might be 2 thin.

After using it I can easily say she was wrong but then again I think on mitsu manual for magna it says 20W - 50 or 15W - 50.

any way keep us updated.
I will surley be going for 10W next time what ever the oil migt be.

As a general rule I wouldnt take what people at Autobarn say as gospel. There have been a few times where Iv checked up on things that sounded dodgy and it turns out they were wrong...even when theyre reading from a book. Im sure not everyone that works at Autobarn is like this but it does pay to get a second opinion, the same goes for all shops.

BTW I buy a fair bit from Autobarn...I just dont listen to them muchlol

No she was not wearing bikini :D

And she was employee of Penrite and not autobarn. She might have gone a bit mixed between 10w and 15W.

well next time i think i will use magnatec 10W and i hope it will fix the problem.
