I'm just working out what to do audio wise to my new favorite toy.

Does anyone have any pictures of there front split installations?

Im looking at purchasing maybe fusion, pioneer or focal.. unsure as yet.

Any thoughts/comments appreciated

Ive got my tweaters in the holes that where already there up on the dash but im told this isnt the best location and your better off looking down the barrel of the tweaters. So you are better off using the spots on the door infront of the mirrors (where the mirror controler would be if it had manual mirrors). The Verada and probably VRX has little plastic tweater holders that you can prolly get from a wreckers or failing that mitsu to house them.

Woofers just in there normal location and ive got the crossovers in the door.

I've also got splits in the back, both tweaters and woofers on the shelf and cross overs gaffer tapped to the bottom of the shelf lol.

tonkins actually modified the original blank sections where the ralliart and VRX's have they're tweeters mounted (the ralliart/vrx mounting pods would have been tooo small anyway) and fitted them quite nicely (looks just like some hot glue held them in quite nicely) and the crossovers are fitted behind the door skin (under the power window switches) apparently theres plenty of room under there

MDF Baffle screwed to door with Hex bolts and T-nuts to hold speakers,
with rubber stripping between baffle and door, sound deadening, foam behind woofer to stop reflection, blah blah

Mmm...Focal.

my bro, who is a stereo installer preffers to install tweeters (granted there isnt any pods at the top of ther door like in the vrx's) in the dash as its gives better sound when reflected off the window at 90 degrees to your ear for some reason

Nice handiwork with the baffles Mulga, I gather there was a lot of trial and error to get the fit right. I hope they're weatherproofed (either MDF Primer + enamel, or polymer resin)or they're going to soak up water like a sponge next winter!

The splits are K2P's (Polykevlar).

RRP $800 ish. Got them off E-bay from a guy in Melbourne for $500.(new)

Worth it? No H/U yet so dunno. Apparently the Focals are excellent woofers but the tweeters are too bright . (these are metal dome tweeters, the silk dome type are supposedly not so harsh)

Painted the baffles? Of course!! You don't think I'd be silly enough to forget something like that do you? :shifty:

"reaches for screwdriver and spraycan"

If you're after sound quality the best position is within say a hands length from the woofer and also as far from the listener as possible.
If they are too far away from the woofer, you will notice separation.
You're better off mounting them in the kickpanels pointed towards the drivers ear on the passenger side and vice versa.

Because you aren't sitting in the centre of a car if you mount the tweeters high on the doors or on the dash, the difference in path distance between the two tweeters is greater. (if you sit on the drivers side, the right tweeter will be much closer to your ears and vice versa) To get better stereo imaging you want to minimise this path difference and the best way to do this, is to mount them as deep in the kick panels as possible, without the dash getting in between the listeners ears.

If you're worried about all the sound coming from too low, you're ears aren't as good as perceiving height as they are on the side of your head

Thats if you were after good sound... Otherwise...

Peace

Tim

Ah cool, whats the definition of a 'kick panel' tho? ;)

I was pondering about having them flush-mounted in the door (where the manual mirror mover'er thingy would be if it had one)ish

cheers

Also on another note, how bad/good is the standard wire?

The splits are getting installed (flush mounted eek) tommorrow at autobarn - i wonder if they will change the wires....

mate u should have spent a few more dollars to get them installed properly. generic places like autobarn (dont have em over here in perth but i guess they are like super-cheap) will jus use existing wires and 'just' do the job. u have spent dollars on a good set of speakers and you wont be doing them any justice unless they are installed properly, spend the money on the install and then the money u spent on the speakers will be worth while

I guess the 3rd gen magnas don't have "panels" so to speak but its the area on the right of the accelerator pedal. The grey plastic cavity attached to the carpet.

Probably too late to do it if it's getting done today, esp if your gonna put holes in your doors, not to worry. But i don't think Autobarn will change your wires, I don't think you'll notice much difference anyway, the splits should be a big improvement.

They ended up putting them in the dash, on the circle plug like creatures.

hmmm :/

Sounds good tho :)

now for the rear... some new 6x9's should just drop in?

what the hell are/were those circle plug like creature things for anyway?

yeah i wondered about that, they are just access points for the nuts behind. Otherwise you wouldnt be able to get the dash off. 6x9's just drop in. Undo the bolts from the boot, then you gotta unclip the grill, move it about a bit and it comes out. Undo the screws for the speakers, this bit is tricky. As there's such little space to fit in a screwdriver, get a phillips head bit off a drill. You know the little bits. Sit this ontop of the screw, push it down with your thumb and turn the whole thing with plyers etc.
Cut the wires at the back, dont bother trying to unclip them, cos they're hard to undo. Then crimp some plugs onto the end of the wires, or solder them up. Pop the grills back on and alls well. Take note of positive and negative colours for the rears.

Usually a good idea to mount a MDF baffle where the speakers are going. btw did they do that for the front? And did they replace the wires?

Those plastic covers are actually replaced with a grill for the tweeter used in the 8sp (10spk?) setup on the Verada's.

Ah kool, I saw a few veradas, but I guess I've never seen any with the premium sound package.
I thought the tweeters were mounted in the triangular mount on top of the doors. Or is that just in the vrx's etc?

10 speakers? Sounds like overkill. Are the tweeters the 9 and 10th ones, cos they are part of the two way setup. I wonder how much r&d they put into stock stereo systems. 8 speaker setups aren't that good for sq.

Verada GTV has 10 speakers.
2x 6inch woofers mounted in the door
2x 3 or 4 inch mids mounted in the dash, usually where the round plastic bit that does nothing in normal cars is, above the temp gauge. Couldn't believe their was a speaker there.
2x 3/4 or 1 inch tweeter in the pods
2x 6x9inch cone
2x 1 - 2 inch tweeter mounted in the 6x9 cone ( therefore 2 way 6x9's ).
= 10 speakers.

My mate just got a GTV and it sounds very nice, 3way splits up front as standard.... yes please. :D

aha poor effort... ;) Jokes!

Gotta get people with those '5 way' speakers... Where the smallest tweeter is a stuck on piece of aluminium... (It plays frequencies so high, I can't even hear them... ) :bowrofl:

lol very true.. I think that i cheating, funny when the salesman pushes 4 and 5 way speakers, I just ask whats the point? Its like having 4 crap subs when 1 good one will do the job :doubt: lol

There are N-way setups that are excellent, and there are N-way setups which are utterly basic and unworthy. It's to do alot about the crossover, those N-way speakers have a very basic crossover network, normally using just a couple of capacitors for a simple filter. Compare those with the high end splits which comes with a crossover network box consisting of a whole lot more componentry (and thats just to crossover two drivers only!).

Or active crossovers... Will be moving onto this soonish.
