Hi, i took delivery of my 03 VR-X manual two weeks ago, however, the car sometime has a problem getting into 2nd gear, both from up-shift and down-shift, any of you guys experienced this before? it's only done 11500 kms.
And are they any benefit performance-wise to be getting a k & n panel filter? apart from the fact that i will never have to buy another filter again.
Thanks guys.

Sounds to me a lot like the previous owner has done a lot of high speed, quick gear changes from first to second and thrashed the syncromesh. I would assume this would be from dragging off busted arse commodores at the traffic lights.

As for the panel filter.. it should get slightly better air flow hence more power. If you're really looking for more power, go for the pod filter and a Cold Air intake.

There's plenty of other guys in here with VRX's so if you wantg some more specific info drop one of them a line and just ask.. you'll find we're all pretty friendly.

The car still has factory warranty left, maybe you should take it to a Mitsubishi dealer?

The change from 1st to 2nd sometimes crunches a bit particularly when the car is cold. As far as I know, pretty well everyone (except those who live in warm climates like Darwin and Qld) experiences this.

Does it do it even when the car is warm??

Second gear is usally rough on most cars. You will find when the gearbox is cold it will be a real pain to shift into second but once its warmed up it should be much better.

Its unlikely that the previous owner has done any damage as these gearboxes are very tough. Clutches are another storey all together but my VRX has done 75,000kms and i've give it a real hiding here and there and still drives like new.

You will find using a full synthetic gearbox oil make gear changing much smoother.

I get the same problem. It's not just crunching in the gears when it's cold, but also 2nd doesn't go in properly. It feels like it won't go any further, but you know that it's not as far back as it should go, then you let go the clutch and it pops out.

I have my '00 VRX in to the shop today to look at it under used car warranty. So will let you know what turns up. They'll probably check the linkages and change the gear oil to something thicker.

I can't say that I have ever had problems with the gearbox in my manual VRX.

My car has done 73000kms and is still running the original gearbox and clutch, and it still drives like the day I bought it.

I would suggest, as someone has already, that you take it to a Mitsubishi dealer and see what they have to say.

P.S. I noticed in your profile that you are in Vic. If you are in the Melbourne area, it would be great to see another VRX on some cruises in the future! What colour is it? :)

Thanks for that guys, i might take it back to the dealer and see whats going on, the car is still under factory warranty. But i does happen when the car is cold, so, it's good that it's not only me that has experienced the problem.
It's a green vr-x.
