In my '99 TH Sports, there is a consistent knock in the engine... I picked it up like this from the damaged auctions... Any ideas?

There isn't enough information, you need to try to give us more details, knocks can be from so many things, without specifics, you'll just be going on a wild goose chase.
but basically, if it sounds light, then there's high probability that it is coming from the tappets or cam related. If it sounds like heavy sort of knock, you may have a loose big end bearing, check your engine oil for deposits of metal and usually it'll have metallic bits in the oil if the big end bearing has failed.
Other knocking could be pinging or detonation or something is loose in your engine bay.

the car has done 80000 ks, are there any common problems after this time?
pulled the tappet cover off front bank and turned engine over, cams appeared to be working as normal, so i put cover back on and started engine and at idle the knock was consistent at about 2 per second when revved to approx 2500rpm in short bursts, the knock sped up but occasionly disappeared or changed to crunching gear noise...
we emptied oil today which was black but there were no traces of metal or sludge...
have removed lower sump, thinking of removing main sump tomorrow...
this is all i can think of at the moment, any replies appreciated...

Anyone out there know of any reasonably cheap mods I could do to increase power whilst having engine rebuilt, probably going to sell car so don,t wish to spend 2 much.
When I removed the sump there were traces of metal (looked like gold dust) no large pieces but no sign of the actual damage so I fear engine needs to be stripped down to find problem.

porting and polishing the heads is meant to be good for 10-15% more grunt. It depends what you consider cheap.. Is it a 3.0 or a 3.5? If it's a 3.5 you could try the ralliart cams and pistons, and even the ralliart heads, and you'd pretty much be rebuilding the engine as a ralliart magna donk.

Gold metal you say?
Big or small end bearings sound stuffed dude.
As for mods, reckon high comp pistons if ya stripping the block.
Bit of head work never goes astray :)

Stuff the pistons, just port the heads and take 20thou off the head to raise the compression. Don't get too greedy and check your valve clearances. Remember the conrods are lengthened at higher rpm when setting your clearances.
