Hey all,

I am interested in buying a 92 verada. I have been and looked at it, and driven it and have a few question about things i should be looking for.

Firstly the overdrive doesn't work. When it is on, and you drive over about 40kph the engine loses all power until you turn the overdrive off. Any ideas on the cause of this. I have spoken to a transmission guy, and he quoted (rough quote based on what i described) about $500-600 to replace the overdrive unit and a genreal service of the rest of the transmission.

Also how much is it usally to replace the whole transmission?

There was also very little steering fluid (below the min on the stick). Could this be just not filling it up, or something more sinister. The guy said he had never filled it up. The Power steering worked fine, and didn't make any strange noises.

There is a dint in the passengers side, but nothing to bad. I think it is just panel damage.

Picks of the car can be found here -> http://fankyfang.smugmug.com/gallery/149890/

He is asking $3500 does this sound reasonable? Any other things to look out for?

Thanks

I went and saw it with dexter, just to clarify its not the engine loosing power, it seems to be the transmission slipping.

The dints in the passenger side are no where near as bad as they look in the pictures.

anyway. thoughts people?

cheers,

Aidan

over drive off wouldnt even do anything at 40, as far as i know..

All it does is not go into 4th gear? And it wont be doing that at 40..

3500 for a verada is dirt cheap. Just pay the $100 or so and have an RACV check. or get someone with mechanical background to check it out.

Definitely get an NRMA check or whatever is applicable for your state. Overdrive wont do anything at 40 anyway.

It will get to overdrive at 40. It all depends on how you drive it. If you drive softly then it will
get into the 4th gear at 40km/hr. If you floor it at every gear and manually change it then it'll
be over 150 when shifting to 4th.

A new transmission is around the $2500 from experience.

hold on, if its on and ur having troubles, then fine when its off.. as in 4th gear is not engaged. then thats a transmision problem. It does not like 4th gear.

doesnt sound healthy.

have you got the power button pushed in? otherwise it wont change gears till you stop.
right below next to the gearstick?

No. The power button (when on) just moves the shift points further up the rev range. Say with
it off, it'll change gears at 2500 rpm and with it on, it'll change gears at 4000 rpm. You don't
need to stop to change from power and eco modes.

Try driving the car a little harder and seeing if the power loss is greater than 40 this time. Like Vlad said (who knows what he's talking about btw), if you were driving it carefully it would have shifted into 4th by 40. I'm not sure this is relevant but i know in my car when you accelerate off the line and change into 2nd (usually around 40-50) you get about a 1 second power loss and then the power kicks in again. But being a verada it woulda been a V6 wouldn't it, hmmm. But it does sound like your 4th gear is stuffed. $500 is a decent price for a rebuild. Vlad is also right about the power button, all it does is make you rev higher.

So the overdrive button in an auto is like the difference between a manual driven by a granny/grandpa or driven by a male p plater? :D

(ps im an auto nooob, never driven one)

Hi mate, and welcome

I am the state rep and I also do a lot of work on members cars here as well.

First of all it is best to have it looked at by someone who will know what is happening with the car and also knows what to look at.

If you want to PM me I am happy to have a look at the car and give you a general run down of what needs doing and what will probably need doing in the near future.

The doors are not hard to get hold of either, I would not bother repairing those, just replace them, I might actually know where to get a pair fairly cheap the right colour as well

BTW the car is a great colour, it is the same as mine lol

Cheers

Just a quick update.

The transmission wouldn't go into 4th. so sitting at 100kph it was pulling around 3200rpm.

Got a machinic to look over the car, and he found about $1500 worth of stuff that needs doing, and that was just the engine. He didn't look at the rest of the car. So looking at $2100 to get the car driveable, plus rego which had just expirered but the car out my of budget. And the guy wasn't selling any cheaper.

The Hunt continues

PS: Thanks for the offer Madmagna. I will shoot you off a PM next time i find something of interest.
