Hi guys,

I know that with an auto transmission you can expect to lose a good deal of power at the wheels compared to the same model in manual form (I've heard 5-15%). However, when the transmission is on it's last legs and needs an overhaul can the power of the car drop accordingly? I've found as my transmission is on it's way out, and I've been modding the car more and more that the power has dropped substantially. Is it just my imagination or should I really fork out for a reco auto gearbox? Cheers, Joe

Yes it is likely the clutches are worn out.

I realise it isn't everyone's cup of tea (and there may be legitimate reasons you got an auto in the first place) - but I've decided if(/when) my auto box dies, I'll be replacing it with a 5sp manual. - there's to many advantages (like cold air)

If i knew I'd love the magna as much as I do, and knowing as much about them when I bought it as I do now.... I would have bought a manual - and I've always driven autos!!!

here here, thats exactly what I'd do if it ever happens to me, it would cost a bit more but in my opinion well worth it.

3k - 4k for a manual convertion in a 3rd gen.............i just cant see the point..........not very good bang for buck, better off selling up and buyin a new car
and thats 2ndhand parts

my auto was on its way out..............i was going to crank up the oil pressure in the auto just to see what it would do (quicker gear change's)
its so easy to do too!!!!!!!!
we'll never know now.

And how do you control that? how simple is it to do that?

Nah I'm a manual driver at heart. This one is an A-B car that got out of hand (and into the workshops!). So I guess it's staying auto, but by the general consensus of people around here it looks like I'll be forking out for a recondition of the crappy Mitsubishi auto box... maybe an oil pressure rise is on the cards while I'm at it, as suggested by TH Smoker :D

hmmm.... I didn't realise it was that much $$$$ I figured if you had to replace the gearbox (auto) anyway - it would be around the same price

And yeah... more info on this 'crank up the oil pressure' business - wouldn't it just boil out thru the dipstick shaft if you overfilled it?

i'm the only idiot stupid enough to do the manual conversion by the sounds of it... and for the 3500-4000 estimate? yeah... for the hardware... then add the software on top of that :S

now who's the dedicated manual driver?!? hahaha... lol

nah... i just figured that selling the car and buying another would b a great idea if i..

a) had no bodykit
b) had a standard exhaust
c) could b bothered swapping the entire stereo over
d) hadnt already spent ages painting the interior
e) could b bothered buying new springs/swapping the lowered ones again
f) could actually find a manual 3.5 for sale in SA!!
